Arrival Story:
Max was born to a feral mom in a Brooklyn backyard. He was trapped for me at 8 weeks of age (using a bowl of food!) and brought to my office by a co-worker. Max spent that day with me on the 65th floor of the WTC, where I worked from 1973 until September 11, 2001. After a ferry ride, a car ride, and a check-up at my vet on the way home, Max spent his first week of isolation here hiding under the bed in the spare bedroom. He was terrified of everything! I even had to push his food under the bed for the first 3 days. To this day, 14 years later, Max is still a timid mama's boy but very, very sweet and loving. UPDATE 2/27/08: Maxie went to Rainbow Bridge this morning. His MRI yesterday found a huge brain tumor, swelling, and fluid. Tumor was inoperable. Could have brought him home with steroids but no guarantee they would help. It would only have been a matter of time - days, weeks, months? I chose to let him go now before he got worse. I feel in my heart it was the right thing to do but it is so very difficult. My little boy is gone.

Max was heartbroken when his older "brother" and best friend, Rocky, passed away at 19 years of age in 2004, even though Rocky would never play with him, no matter how much Max tried. He became even more clingy with mommy and more timid with daddy. He seemed OK as an only child but I decided a companion kitty might help. Serena joined the family in July 2004 but she and Max never really bonded. He wanted to chase her and play but she would not. In 2006, I adopted two kittens, Pepper and Madison, so Max (and I!) would have playmates. He does play with them, occasionally, but sometimes I think he just gave up trying after being rebuffed so many times over the years! I love Max very much and always give him lots of hugs and cuddles.
