Arrival Story:
I was looking to adopt a cat and visited Feline Rescue ( in St. Paul. There she picked me. I walked through the cat rooms and mingled with the cats that I'd liked online; back and forth petting this cat and that cat. I returned to the lobby, Cookie came up to say "hi" and wandered off. Then, Kirby planted herself on my lap for some loving. She hissed and growled at any of the other cats that were foolish enough to come too close. How could I say "no" to those lovely gold eyes?

Leala was the queen of the house until Kirby moved in, she has now been relegated to princess. Kirby is the reigning queen.

Kirby's Saga

The porch is clean!

Roommate was on vacation last week and cleaned the porch. What does this have to do with Kirby?? She is spending a lot of time snoozing in the chairs that are no longer piled high with boxes and bags. It's been her dog-free sanctuary unless the dogs pass through on their way in or out. She's been batting at the moths and bugs that make it through the screens and trying to catch the mice in the woodstack.

Last night, I was on the couch and Niko was sitting in front of me getting some attention. Kirby came over and started sniffing Niko; she gave him a total once over. He just ignored her 'cuz he was gettin some lovin' from me.

This morning I fed Niko and went into the kitchen to get a drink. Niko had started eating before I left the room but when I came back Kirby was eating his food. Niko was laying in the hallway looking all dejected, watching Kirby eat. She's lucky he doesn't have food aggression and is so submissive. Of course, that's the only reason I feed him loose, all the others are crated for meal time. I shooed her away from his bowl and fed her her breakfast and Niko went back to eating his.

Not Kirby, me (her mom). I, finally, figured out that her batting and biting while I am petting her is play. So now we are breaking out the laser light, and her mouse on a wand in order to redirect her to appropriate play.

Of all the toys that I have bought her, what does she play with on her own??? A frond of a plastic aquarium plant that fell off when I was setting up my old 15 gallon tank for Zulu (housemate's betta). Forget the crinkle balls, the fluff ball on a spring and catnip mice, she likes a piece of broken plastic.
