The alphabet. We all learned it when we were kittens.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

When we joined Catster, we found that you can take letters from the alphabet and make acronyms that we've all come to use and love.

MOL - Meow Out Loud

SDA - Samoa's Detective Agency

POP - Power of the Paw, Power of the Purr

OF - Olde Furt

HQ - Headquarters

BOLO - Be on the Lookout

When you're new to Catster, you don't understand the lingo at first, but then you realize that cats have their own language. It's a shorthand way of meowing. We totally get it.

Adults have their own shorthand language too. Some of the shorthand letters when strung together stand for words that aren't not nice to say outloud. But apparently, it is okay to say or write them in shorthand. I guess adults think it is less offensive if you use the letters rather than the words.

As I mentioned in a previous diary, I started some discussion to HQ on this subject over at the Dogster and Catster Magazine thread in the Dogster and Catster All Paws Bulletin group.

Well, we heard from Dogster Lucy (whose owner is our Community Manager, Lori). Here is what she had to say:

The editor-in-chief has deemed profane acronyms appropriate for Dogster and Catster Magazine.

I have some questions:

1. Why don't I see the offensive and profane acronym on Dogster? We don't want it on Catster!

2. I wonder if the advertisers who pay gobs of money to be here would like seeing those profane acronyms near their kitty litter ad?

3. If the trending acronym is acceptable, then what comes next? Other acroynms using the letter F? Surely U wouldn't? Or would U?

And then, Lori said this:

This is YOUR Community, I work for YOU. If you feel that they should be allowed in the Community areas of Dogster and Catster, let me know and I will modify the guidelines.

So, cats - do you want dirty words to be allowed in the Community?

U might but I don't . . . . . . . .

Is WTM? (what the meow) considered profanity? I sure hope not, I use that one a lot! And we do talk about poop a lot, I sure hope that one isn't a bad word.

We totally agree Samoa, i hate what they have done to Catster. i have read using bad language shows a lack of verbal and vocabulary skills. Unless a miracle occurs i can't see HQ listening to us. so so sad.

No! I do not want to see inappropriate language..that is one of the great joys that makes this a much better place to hang out compared to the sex, violence and adult language on FB.

We don't want dirty words. Not here and not on the main catster page either. Not ANYWHERE on Catster. What are they thinking to say profane acronyms are acceptable on the main pages? What will the dogs think of us? They'll think we're all nasty kitties because bad words are being used on Catster. *hisss* *hisss*

NO we dun wants bad words, or shwearing, or sickening, upsetting videos, or any of the other things that seem to be tainting thish once family-friendly site. Thish ish why we really dun looks around here any more and just meows in couple of furry nice PURRivate groups - or comments to our furriends diaries. It ish furry sad that Catster took out "all posts must be suitable for a seven year old" from their guidelines - it wash a wunnerful idea to have that in there.....

We don't want 'bad' words, or videos or things that are scary to our people or that aren't cat friendly. We think that this should be a place we can all come and get away from this sort of thing.

We no longer feel safe on the site - and we are furry worried about what kind of people will be attracted here now, and all of this just makes us not want to log on here much any more. Many of our dearest furriends left some time ago, because of the direction the site was going in, and now we wonders if we should just give up too. Honestly, it is furry depressing - and the sad part is, there was never any need fur this - all they had to do was keep the original, family furriendly guidelines in place, and support the wonderful members of the Catster community. It's not the site we knew and loved, at least not at the moment. Furry sad!!
