Kody's Mom here:
Last Thursday before we left to go to Arizona I saw Kody licking and licking, then he went in to use his box. I walked past him, he hissed and growled at me, ran to the rug stopped and licked.
I knew immediately that he was having urinary problems, so I had to take him to the Vet ER near our house he vet wasn't open yet. They checked him out and found that he had mucous blocking him. They removed it and gave him pain medication hoping he would be OK. They explained what they found and what was going on with him.
I brought him home very worried about leaving him with the pet sitter, but he was acting fine. She kept a watch on him as much as she could while we were gone and kept me up to date.
After returning home Sunday evening he was acting like he was fine, till yesterday morning he was doing the same thing. So I called his Vet and they wanted me to bring him in so they could watch over him during the day and check him out. They had to sedate him because after the ER visit he wanted nothing to do with them doing things to him. They did an ultrasound found that his bladder had a lot of stuff floating in there & he was plugged again, they decided to give him Sub Q Fluids, a catheter to help him pee. later in the day I was able to bring him home, he was so happy to be back with us. He was sleepy, but he ate and we watched him, I was up and down all night.
This morning while getting there food ready I turned he was straining to pee on a a rug that Xena likes to sit on, he was there for some time. He didn't want to eat which is so unlike Kody, finally I got him to eat, he wasn't trying to get any more food.
He was already scheduled to go in so they could check on him, so off we went once again to the Vet. I had a doctors appointment as well, so I planned on leaving him there and go pick him up afterwards. Before I got in for my appointment our Vet called.
Not good, his bladder was in larged because he wasn't peeing. They needed to do the catheter again this time it was sewn in so it will stay for several days. She thought maybe I could bring him home, but the Tech called and they feel it would be best if he stays at the vet over night, maybe two. He is not doing well at all. I am so very worried about him he is so young for this to happen.
If this doesn't help him along with a special diet he will have to have surgery.
What I have found out is the large males are prone to having this and Kody is a large boy he weighs 15lbs. now. I never knew this!
Please pray for my sweet purring Kody!
Kody's worried Mom
Oh no! So sorry to hear about this! Reuben had the crystals in his urine and was diagnosed with FUS. I hope all goes well! We know it's difficult to watch and go through so we are sending some POP your way!
Hugs and purrs,
Simon & Reuben(an angel)
Oh I am purring fur Kody that he gets better soon! Taffy had crystals too and was at the Vets fur a couple days with a catheter. He got to eat special food and got better. I know Kody will too with the help of all our purrs!
We will rev up our purr engines that all will be well soon fur dear little (big) Kody.
Sending pawyers, too.
We are praying and purring for Kody. I had the crystals also and was blocked. That was years ago. I was 16 lbs, now I'm 13.1. I had the special food too. It actually dissolves crystals. Now I eat normal food again but only wet with very little kibble sometimes as a treat.
So sorry you are having to go through this Peggy! Sammy had this same issue a couple of years ago. We had him on prescription food until the problem cleared and he has done well since then. I encourage wet food and give him baby meat with water mixed in it to increase moisture in his diet. I also put Feliway diffusers in the house because stress can be a contributing factor. Purrs from all of us!
Oh buddy, so sad to hear you're having a bad time. I too had crystals, and had to be on the prescription food. Now I have to be on hypoallergenic food and mom keeps her fingers crossed every day. The canned wet vs the dry seems to help. We are sending HUGE PURRRRRS your way. Feel better soon!!!!
We hope that you are better soon and won't need surgery dear friend. None of us has had that problem yet, though Bob had a urinary tract infection once. Keeping you in our thoughts and purrs Kody.
Love Marmelade and Family
He's 15 lbs already? How in the world did he grow so fast?! Wow! I'm so sorry this is happening! We're purring up a storm for him to get well fast!
Thank you my friends for purring and praying for my boy, yes he is big, he just kept on growing, he is solid though....
I am so very worried about him, the Vet called and said he is doing well and is comfortable...I wanted to go be with him, but don't want to upset him.
I am getting the Feliway and looking into alternatives as well for the long term once he is better.
With us planning on moving next year about this time I do worry about the stress for him...We have to go through things and get read for the move so I know I have my work cut out for me to keep him healthy...
Kody loves can food, more than the dry so that won't be a problem getting rid of the kibble.
Again thank you all for your comments and once again being here for us...I know Kody feels your love and purrs for him. I can't wait to get him home...not sure if he will be able to come home tomorrow or Thursday. I will update when I can.
much love and lots of hugs from me and Kody
oh Kody, i am so sorry to hear you have been such a sick little boy! i went thru the same thing a few years ago, it was really bad and mom was so afraid for me. since then i have had no dry food and she gives me extra water in a syringe every day. no more problems. since i only eat canned food now i am down to a good weight and my fur is slick and shiny. mom calls me Sammy the Seal MOL. we are saying lots of extra prayers for you too my friend.
Oh, my. We are all purring for Kody. So young to have medical problems!
Oh Kody!!~know just what your going thru little doodman!!~YKUPPERS been there twice.
I am a big boy, but had to loose weight, this is very important!! And I am only allowed the Ur Stox veterinary formula medicated food, sometimes I eat the SO too, same thing different company. Meomwy gives me a good table spoonful in the centre of my dish and then fills my dish with water. I have to eat by myself, and it took about a week for this to get drilled into my head. But I like it this way now.
Its a scary time, but with the right food and lots of patience you and your Meowmy will get thru this. I have an awesome vet now and he did say if this ever happens again I can have one surgery to correct this once and for all. But we really don't want to go there, as its a huge surgery. So Kody please stay on your medicated food, loose some weight and drink lots and lots of water.
Sending lots of purrs to Kody.
We are purring our hardest for you, Kody. I (Harley) have had those issues too & mom is constantly vigilant about what is going on with me in the litter box because of it. Big problem is that I won't eat wet food. Mom has tried every kind of canned, pouched & raw food out there. I (and Cody) will sometimes lick at it a few seconds, but we won't eat it. Mom has even thought about taking away all kibble, figuring that if I get hungry enough, I will finally eat the wet food. But because Cody had a near-death illness (he used up at least 1 of his 9 lives) 2 years ago when he quit eating (mom says he is now her $10,000 cat), mom is afraid to do that because she is afraid Cody might just not eat. So we know what you all are going through & we are purring our hardest that you get better soon & don't have to have surgery.
Oh my buddy - I too blocked twice, and Momma said to tell your mom she knows how scary it is! I blocked on Easter Sunday the first time, and it was awful. Then 10 days later. I was on the prescription food for a while, but I then refused to eat the canned. Now I get mostly canned, but the few kibbles I get for a snack are the prescription food, and Mom gives me a cranberry urinary supplement once a month. She also uses PH strips & will chek my pee every so often. OK mom...really? but it makes her feel better...aside from the Feliway, may I suggest PetNaturals of Vermont calm treats? They also help Felix, and Mom will give them to me when I am getting hyper. I hope you do not need the surgery buddy, cause it is not a fun thing - we looked into it at that time. Maybe even a little extra water in your wet food may help. Oh and be prepared for your mom to be checking the box all the time...I know mine did....eeesh moms.....
