Arrival Story:
Stinky was abandoned as a kitten because he was very ill. Someone had found him in a box somewhere in Marin, and brought him to the Humane Society. We adopted him, and almost immediately had an name for the poor little guy who was still recovering from his illness - Stinky. Stinky because he frequently "parfumed" our living room with some potent bad gas.

Bio:
Stinky has been with us ever since. He's a world traveller as he has moved to Europe and back. We call our Stinky the "Buddha Cat" because he tries to be friends with every other cat in our neighorhood. He never gets into fights, and seems to be every younger kitten's father. Every day, he's been waiting for us to come home from work at 5 o'clock. He's been a happy kitty loving the outdoors, but also enjoying to stay home whenever we were home up until February 14th, 2005. That day, he was feeling very badly and he's been in the hospital every since due to kidney problems. He's supposed to come home soon, but we don't know how long he's going to be with us. We love him a lot, and can't imagine no longer having him with us.

On Tuesday, 28 June 2005, Stinky had to be put to sleep. He was a brave little guy trying to fight a battle against kidney disease. After weeks in the hospital, his health started improving for the next 3 months at home. But at the beginning of June an ulcer created other complications. During the month of June he started losing too much blood through his stomac, and his weakened body was no longer able to produce enough red blood cells. Our poor little guy got weaker and weaker with every day. On Monday, the 27th I took the day off knowing that I would be losing Stinky soon. I took him outside on a leash. Despite his declining health, he would still find energy for a hike around the apartment complex and his sparkling eyes would hide the severity of his illness. On Tuesday, a warm sunny day, Stinky and I were on our porch all day. He had gotten too tired to walk more than a few feet, he appeared to be in pain, and his eyes had lost that loving sparkle. Knowing that his death was only a day or two away, and warned by my vet that he might suffer horribly, my wife and I made the very difficult decision to put an end to our Stinky's pain. In the evening of the 28th we took him to our vet, where he got a lot of hugs and kisses and some of his favorite treats for one last time.

Our Buddha cat was a very special guy, and we are deaply saddened to no longer have him with us. He has given us so much more than we could ever give him. His meowing for milk in the morning, the jumping across the bed to make us get up, his "hey, look at me not the newspaper" attitude, his waiting outside for us to come back from work, his purrs and jumps onto my back will be missed a lot.

First day home

Friday evening, the 25th of February Stinky was allowed back home. He's tired, but happy to be home. He sleeps a lot, and visits the litter box frequently. He also eats, which is a very good thing. Things could be better though, and it's still to early to tell how Stinky is going to come out of this. We are fighting his infection with antibiotics, he's getting EPO to boost his red blood cell count, and he needs sub-Q fluids to keep him hydrated twice a day. He's a brave little guy, staying calm whenever we poke him with needles. Hopefully, his condition will keep improving so that he can return living a normal kitty-life. Despite his illness, his eyes turn big and round when looking through the window; he wants to go outside badly.
