Arrival Story:
BK was saved from a kill shelter when its employees couldn't stand the thought that he might be put to sleep. They called the rescue group I foster for to take him out of there. He went straight to the group's vet to see if he could figure out why BK was half bald. He had no fur on his belly and the insides of his legs. His head was half bald and covered with scratches and scabs. He was at the vet for weeks but he wasn't able to help. The group asked if I would foster him. He was only my second foster ever. I went to pick him up from the vet and couldn't believe the sight of him. What was this, leprosy? He didn't even have any whiskers! I brought him home and soon found that whatever he had, it didn't affect his playfulness, affection and charming personality. When none of the meds he was on worked, I finally got BK in to see a dermatologist. She was convinced he had allergies and started him on an elimination diet and more meds. At one point he must have been on 10 things - pills, liquids, ear drops, you name it. We put him in a cone to give his poor skin a chance to recover. Eventually the vet gave us the magic pill - Atopica. Within days the itching stopped, the cone could come off, and BK started to heal. All this happened over a period of months. By this time I was pretty invested in his health and we had bonded thoroughly. There were many nights that BK didn't feel well and the only thing that made him feel better was lying on mommy's tummy. I was adamant that I didn't want a forever cat - I only wanted to foster - but when the rescue group started saying, gee he looks better now, let's get him adopted, I realized that my life wouldn't be complete without this special boy. Although the BK originally stood for Bald Kitty (as a new fosterer I was trying not to get attached and I didn't care for the name he came with), it could also stand for BEST KITTY ever. BK is a master of zen. He never gets excited, no matter how many crazy fosters I bring home. He likes them all and is the first to give the Welcome Ear Wash. He loves people and especially loves going out into the hallway of our apartment building to greet the neighbors. He's gotten quite attached to his long-term foster brother Teddy and is trying to convince me I need to adopt him too. We had our one year anniversary recently and I'm happy to say that BK couldn't be better. He's still on the Atopica but we're down to every other day. I've transitioned him to a raw diet and his fur is like silk. We're going to visit the dermatologist again soon - just to show off!
