Kisses on his head. Oh wait, that may be what mommy likes most.
When mommy won't let him go in the hall to visit the neighbors.
A bottle cap. Any bottle cap.
Raw rabbit. Venison is a close runner up.
BK was saved from a kill shelter when its employees couldn't stand the thought that he might be put to sleep. They called the rescue group I foster for to take him out of there. He went straight to the group's vet to see if he could figure out why BK was half bald. He had no fur on his belly and the insides of his legs. His head was half bald and covered with scratches and scabs. He was at the vet for weeks but he wasn't able to help. The group asked if I would foster him. He was only my second foster ever. I went to pick him up from the vet and couldn't believe the sight of him. What was this, leprosy? He didn't even have any whiskers! I brought him home and soon found that whatever he had, it didn't affect his playfulness, affection and charming personality.
When none of the meds he was on worked, I finally got BK in to see a dermatologist. She was convinced he had allergies and started him on an elimination diet and more meds. At one point he must have been on 10 things - pills, liquids, ear drops, you name it. We put him in a cone to give his poor skin a chance to recover. Eventually the vet gave us the magic pill - Atopica. Within days the itching stopped, the cone could come off, and BK started to heal.
All this happened over a period of months. By this time I was pretty invested in his health and we had bonded thoroughly. There were many nights that BK didn't feel well and the only thing that made him feel better was lying on mommy's tummy. I was adamant that I didn't want a forever cat - I only wanted to foster - but when the rescue group started saying, gee he looks better now, let's get him adopted, I realized that my life wouldn't be complete without this special boy.
Although the BK originally stood for Bald Kitty (as a new fosterer I was trying not to get attached and I didn't care for the name he came with), it could also stand for BEST KITTY ever. BK is a master of zen. He never gets excited, no matter how many crazy fosters I bring home. He likes them all and is the first to give the Welcome Ear Wash. He loves people and especially loves going out into the hallway of our apartment building to greet the neighbors. He's gotten quite attached to his long-term foster brother Teddy and is trying to convince me I need to adopt him too.
We had our one year anniversary recently and I'm happy to say that BK couldn't be better. He's still on the Atopica but we're down to every other day. I've transitioned him to a raw diet and his fur is like silk. We're going to visit the dermatologist again soon - just to show off!

Our buddy Leo has tagged us in his love bug diary - thanks Leo! Here we go:
1. Meow! Are you a noisy kitty or a quiet kitty?
I'm quiet until mom settles in bed to watch TV at night. Then I play a game with her to try to get her up. I meow and she meows back. It's like singing a song. Although mom can't sing at all!
2. Litterbox! Cover your business or let some other kitty cover?
I not only cover but try to make it go away. I come out with litter dust on my head and on my big clown feet. Mom has to wipe me down some days.
3. Happy! Favorite Daily Routine?
When mommy comes home and opens the apartment door so I can go out in the hallway. I wander and explore and sometimes I just sit and oversee everything, like the king of the 6th floor.
4. Hiss! Least Favorite Routine?
EAR DROPS!! Those things are nasty and I run if mom even says the words!
5. Ding-Dong! What do you think about visitors to your house?
I have to be the first one to greet anyone that comes over. They have to pass my inspection of course!
6. Friends! Do you like other animals?
My nickname is The Ambassador because I love all the fosters that come in. Well, almost all of them. We've had a few that I wasn't crazy about. But I never start any trouble!
Thanks for tagging us Leo! It's fun to learn about other kitties!

So I thought mom was going to write a diary entry today about how it was my special Gotcha Day and how I changed her life for the better in so many ways and how amazing I am and… OW! Mom!!! OK, OK! It turns out she wants me to write about my "new" sister! She's not really that new, but I guess it just dawned on mom that she's staying and needs her own page. (Thanks Auntie Jenn, for the kick in the butt she needed!)
Her name is Callie and she's pretty special. When Teddy died mom and I were heartbroken but she eventually realized we had room in our hearts for another special needs kitty. Callie is a CH (Cerebellar Hypoplasia) or "wobbly" kitty, and she's almost blind. It's taken me a while to get used to how she bumbles around and falls over, especially when she falls on ME, but I've gotten used to her now and… alright, I'll admit it, I kind of like her.
I hope you'll come see her page and ask her to be friends. Her Catster ID number is 1193976 and she's pretty cute!

I'm taking a break from purring with joy to tell everyone that I finally got rid of that grumpy foster, Miss Vicky! A friend of a friend of mom's decided he needed a grump at his house and he just picked her up - woo hoo!! OK mom, time for a playmate for me!
Note from mom: I'm sure you can imagine the relief I feel after finding the perfect home for Miss Vicky. A very special guy who lost his own crabby cat last year agreed to give her a try. It's a long term foster with intent but I've seen them together and it's a match made in heaven. It just goes to show, there's a home out there for everycat. Many thanks to all our Catster friends for their purrs and spreading the word!!
