Arrival Story:
Update: On June 11th, 2009, Oberon finally succumbed to renal failure, high blood pressure and a rare blood disease called Polycythemia. We will miss him every day forward from now until forever. We fought an uphill battle - but he was happy until his very last day. We find a lot of comfort in that. ---------------------------------- ----------------- Oberon was rescued from a high-profile case involving a cat collector in New York City who had over 100 cats. He is 11 years old. Sadly, the first 10 years of his life was spent confined to a small cage. The woman who kept him, rather than neuter him, kept him caged instead. But he was responsible for most of the 30 other white cats in this crazy house - so I guess he got out sometimes! Oberon! The Humane Society of New York stepped in along with a few other rescue groups and took the cats out of this hellish environment. So his 11th year before he came to me, was spent at the Humane Society where they smothered him with lots of love and attention. As a recent volunteer there, I fell in love with this old guy - the sweetest temperament you could possibly imagine and as easy going as the Pop-in-Fresh Dough Boy and as cute as that little ice cream man "Mister Softee". Oberon is now the "owner" of our art gallery and greets everyone who comes in the door. We spend every day, all day with him and our lives will never be the same. To see a cat come from such horrible beginnings and to be so generous with constant head butts and rubs, playful and friendly - even at his age - is a humble reminder of what's really important. Oberon is also looking for a feline friend to spend his nights with. Platonic only. Permanent committment, forever home, age not important, must be as sweet as pie and just as laid back and easy going as he is. [UPDATE] - Obie now has his best friend. Klaatu is a humble sweetie who looks to Oberon for guidance. Klaatu was also a rescue from a horrid situation. I think they're still swapping stories. I often find them curled up together or licking each other with intense affection. It melts my heart.

Oberon is so cool and funny. He sleeps with his tongue out (I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I revealed a few of his very personal secrets). Since this is the first length of time he's spent out of a cage, he often takes to zooming6777775788888 {that was Obie across the keyboard - see! - ....... takes to sliding around our slick painted floor chasing his fuzzy mouse. It's like he can't believe he's got so much space. And with his white paws - we always know when it's time to clean. Funny how that works. After he's had his breakfast (which he often takes breaks from his beloved bowl and comes to me at the computer as if to say thanks for the grub and gimmee a rub) he lands himself square on my desk. I've cleared everything off, with Oberon's help, and now it's his responsibility to make sure my typing is correct and has just the right amount of kitty drool on the keyboard. OH - did I tell you he drools when he purrrrs? It's very cute. He'll talk to you if you need some cat translation of anything you're working on - but only when asked - and comes when you call him. I often need my desk swept clean of papers and folders and he's very attentive and willing to oblige. He's getting used to being held - still a bit scary for him. And he's making progress on being a lap cat. It's really a foreign thing for him - but he's warming up to it slowly but surely. What he lives for is petting - especially scritches on those big fat jowls of his. Right now he's sprawled out on my desk with his tongue out (he doesn't have a whole lot of front teeth to keep it in) and just the littlest pat on the head brings such a look of contentment on his face. He squints his eyes real tight and then looks over your way in a sleepy, super satisfied kinda way and then he pushes the side of his face against your hand and starts his lowdcblspurrxfgtvb (more Obie) - he left to check out his bowl again. It's the kind of expression that just melts away any stress, stupid phone calls, computer crashes, taxis honking outside - it all just goes away because he just seems so grateful to have a home. But I think it's really the other way - I feel like the one who's just been adopted and is starting a new life. ha!
