Arrival Story:
I was driving home from a softball game one evening and I saw this cute little kitten near the side of the road. He was walking towards the road, so I pulled over immediately and jumped out to grab him because I was afraid he was going to wander into traffic. Eeek!! I picked him up and he was the tiniest little thing and so darn adorable. I wandered around the neighborhood that was nearby and asked if anyone was missing a kitten. Nobody that they knew of was. He was pretty smelly, dirty, and hungry, so I think he'd been wandering on his own for a couple of days. I decided to bring him home with me, give him a bath, give him some food and make him mine!!

Kirby became ill very quickly. He was always a healthy kitty, but one day I noticed that he was tilting his head. The next day the tilt was greater and then his balance seemed to be a bit off. One day later he was beginning to stagger even more and seemed to have difficulty eating.

So off to the Vet we went. They suspected an ear infection and gave him some anitobiotics. He kept getting worse and worse... the antiobiotics weren't working. After two days of antiobiotics and a steady decline, I took him to the Vet's again. They observed him overnight and diagnosed him with Vestibular Disease. Basically, this disease causes dizzyness and throws off equilibrium, which made Kirby feel as if his whole world was spinning. He no longer knew which way was up. He kept trying to upright himself, not realizing he was already upright. Cats usually do not do very well with this disease.

So I brought him home hoping for the best. He went downhill so quickly. By the next day he could no longer stay on his feet. He kept falling whenever he would try to go to the litterbox. It was absolutely awful to watch. I took him back to the vet hoping they could observe him for another day.

The Vet told me that if the antibiotics were not working then he probably had some sort of mass in his brain that was putting pressure on his inner ear and causing the Vestibular Disease. She told me she thought it was "Kirby's time." I was shocked. After talking with her for a while, I knew that the best thing for Kirby was to let him go and to put him out of his misery. He was suffering so badly.

So she gave me some private time with my sweet boy. I just couldn't believe it was happening. She came back in and let me hold my sweet Kirby as he drifted off to sleep one last time. It was so sad, but so nice to finally see him at peace. I miss my sweet boy. But I am blessed to have the time I did with him. He was a wonderful cat and my life is better because I was able to share it with him.
