Hi everyone, I'm turning my diary over to mommy for a minute so she can tell you about her conversation with Ted! Samoa's mom and Hazel Lucy's mom also had conversations with him this week, and you can read about them here (Samoa) and here (Hazel Lucy).
Hi everyone, it's Tabby's mom Lisa. I wanted to tell you what I discussed with Ted today.
I briefly mentioned a couple of the issues that the Community Homepage is still having, such as anonymous rosettes not showing up and the Purr Board not updating. They will be working on these problems. Ted also said that they aren't happy with the new Catster logo and that they will be creating a new one. Overall, they are continuing to tweak the Community Homepage as your suggestions come in, and he welcomes any and all feedback.
My main focus was on the community's concerns over the Nutro ads. I thanked him for his lengthy reply to Tabby's diary, which I truly appreciated. I know many members are still upset that we weren't getting any answers, and he apologized for that as well, stating that he is away from the office. He admits that communication could have been better.
I briefly summarized the events of the past three years - the HUGE recall of 2007, the cat food recall of May 2009, the puppy food recall of October 2009, and the many complaints by consumers despite the fact that there were no further recalls. Ted promises to listen more carefully in the future to the community, the FDA, and other websites. I plan on sending Ted the links to the Truth About Pet Food website, including this article, as well as a list of recalls as listed on the FDA website.
Finally, Ted emphasized that they need advertisers in order to pay the bills. I understand this. They do not get enough money to pay for everything through subscriptions and zealie purchases. I asked about the idea of raising the price for Plus subscriptions. In order to get rid of all ads, the annual price for a Plus subscription would be a lot of money. However, if they went to different pricing levels, it would be a lot more reasonable. In other words, you would still be able to pay $20 a year for Plus, but you'd have ads on your pages as they are now. But you'd have the option of paying $40 a year for no ads anywhere on the site as you view it.
And let's remember, the Nutro ads are only going to be on the Vet Blog page through the end of June.
I welcome your comments! :)
Hugs and lots of love,

I'm glad you were able to talk with Ted, and I think he can now see our point of view and why we are upset. And I know you beautiful angel Tabby is giving you her best smile!
Tabby, I'm very glad you had a good conversation with TopCat Ted. But I still have some tough questions for him... as soon as I can put them all together coherently... mol
You are a beautiful, eloquent Angel... I am convinced that the heaven's gain was completely the Earth's loss.
I have no words to express the deep sorrow and sympathy that my family extend to yours.
(there are the instances where words seems so inadequate to express our heart's feelings)
Thank you and purrs to your Mommy's strength in researching and reliving the horrible food recalls that even now, (although slower) continue to plague us.
Tenderest purrs of comfort to you and your brave Mom!
We Love You !
There simply *must* be a much more careful and well researched approach on Dogster and Catster as to which pet products are allowed to advertise here - that is esssential. We want to be sure that something like the Nutro debacle doesn't happen here again. Thank you to Mommy for stressing that issue! We do not mind ads, as long as they are for *safe* products and would not be willing to pay more for Plus memberships - of course that is up to other members how they would want to handle that choice. 20 dollars is really a lot of money for a website, and so many out there are free - so Catster and Dogster really need to provide us with something very special to warrant paying in our opinion. This would also include kind and prompt customer service, as well as the occasional fun free gift thing, like the hamburgers and hot dogs. But really the MOST important thing of all is that we have *safe* products sponsoring the site! We think Nutro should no longer even be in business and we are so sorry you lost your life to it, and we love you and your Mommy so very, very much!~
Any word on the removal of the Nutro ads from Dogster? It was on Dogster's community home page last weekend. As great as it will be to have Nutro off the vetblog, I am still worried about my doggie friends.
I am sorry to say but there is a LOT of us who are retired and on FIXED (very fixed)incomes and a $40 yearly fee is OUTRAGEOUS!!!!! The amount we pay now is fine with some of us. I am feeding and providing medical care for 11 dogs and 11+ feral cats. Do you want me to tell you what that costs for a year???? As for the advertisers- do you realize with out them we would NOT get freebie gifts (like Memorial Day) to give out to friends. If you DON'T like the Brand or Company- WHY can't you ignore it?
Tabby, thank you to your mom for talking with Ted about this issue. It must have been so hard for her to talk about such a painful subject and we SF gals and Mama J sure do appreciate it.
We love you!
Purrs & Hugs,
The SF Gals (Mama J too!)
We do not mind ads either as long as they are for safe products and might even consider a small increase for absolutely NO ads and maybe a bigger zealie allowance. But still would like to see the 20 dollar and free levels remain in place. My main concern with the Nutro ads is a lot of people who go web surfing for pet info are first-time pet owners and may not be aware of the recalls and deaths associated with Nutro. Many would blindly trust a product they saw on Catster/Dogster.
Tabby we have the tremendous respect for your meowmy and love for you, pray this has not been as hard on her as we imagine it is.
Hugs Norman and family
Dear Tabby and Lisa,
It sounds like you had a good conversation with Top Cat Ted. I’m so glad that you had the chance to share your story and experiences with him and that he was receptive and willing to listen.
Catster is such a unique, amazing community and it’s good to know that those who started this community are willing to communicate and listen to feedback from the community.
Your story is especially important as you know all too well the trauma, heartbreak, and grief of losing a beloved kitty to bad food. And then to see that food advertised here, in this community of animal lovers and animal advocates; I can’t even imagine what it feels like for you and other victims of that product to see it advertised on Catster. I doubt that it’s possible to *ignore* ads for a product that has killed kitties including your own sweet Tabby.
Thank you so much for sharing this with Ted and with the Catster community. Lisa, you are an incredible advocate. And Tabby, you are an amazing guardian angel.
Lucy, Leo, Charlie, and family
P.S. Leo sends lovebug kisses and headbonks!
Yes, you would still be able to use the site for free or for $20 a year, just as you can now. Sorry if that wasn't clear. The increased amount would simply be a different price level, another option. It would include an ad-free site for you, and possibly some other perks. :)
As for ignoring the ads, that's impossible for me. And don't forget that I'm not doing this for me, I'm doing it for YOU. The community. Ted was very understanding about the emotional aspect of it all. So Maynard, I would ask that you read my diary entry again, and understand it before you comment. I did state that I understand the need for advertising. In my own words, "Finally, Ted emphasized that they need advertisers in order to pay the bills. I understand this." I appreciate that you have a strong opinion against going ad-free, but no one would force you to do so. Thank you.
Maynard, God bless your mom for doing the work she does while being on a fixed income. I believe if you'll go & re-read Tabby's diary entry you'll see that raising everycat's Plus subscription price was NEVER given more than a passing glance BECAUSE of the money it would cost.
What IS being considered is a 2 tier scenario where for instance you could continue on as you are now with the $20 per year & I (for instance) not liking ads could OPT to pay $40 to not have to see those ads.
Also forgive me if I'm missing something but how in the world would me paying more for my Plus subscription make things like the Memorial Day picnic not happen? I mean we've always had the hotdog & hamburgers but this year HQ DECIDED to gift them to us. (btw THANK YOU HQ! they really were delicious)
Absolutely great mews!!! Meowmy says she'd pay more if it was necessary to keep Catster fur cats and not fur big companies who just want to make a buck!
I'd pay more for a plus membership with no ads. I'd pay a lot more for a plus membership with a greater monthly allotment of zealies. Maybe they could have several tiers of plus membership? I'd pay up to $100 a year for a "premium plus" membership that, say, had no ads and gave us 50 zealies a month or something... or maybe made one of the rosies free for that level of membership. I'm sure mom would still buy zealies because she wouldn't want to just use the same old free rosie for every occasion. Or, they could make one of the really special rosies, like the wings, free for a "premium" membership. We certainly wouldn't use those for every gift! Just throwing out some thoughts.
I'm glad your mommy talked to Mr. Ted. I think they do care about us. Humans just aren't purrfect like we cats are and they are stumbling on their big paws a bit while they try to make huge changes.
Sorry about that, Hook jumped the computer as I trying to post...anyway, thank you for talking with Ted...I know it is hard. I would be willing to pay for a Plus membership with NO Ads, but as it is, we still do has ads on our pages at the top! You get what you pay for...well, show us something! Make us want it. Right now, no one is willing to pay up. Think about it Ted...
That's so great, Tabby & Lisa! Thank you for talking to Ted about this important issue, and getting some stuff resolved. We would probably stay at the $20 level of Plus, but if some were able to go to the $40 level then Catster/Dogster could be more picky about what companies they choose to accept advertising from. :)
Oh Tabby & Meowmy, thanks fur being able to communicate to Ted & the Community through your probable horror! at seeing the N**** ads! We are soooo sorry fur that!
Thanks fur spreading words to save other kitties. You are a dear angel, Tabby.
Your ideas & words on how to help keep Catster going, & to keep the Catster community together were very thoughtful & well said.
We send our most pawsitive energies to you, Tabby, & especially to your Meowmy.
Love & our heartfelt sympathies, Fluffy & Alex.
