Arrival Story:
PLEASE ADD US AS A FRIEND!! thanks!! QUESTION: HOW does Jazzmine make more friends here?? I had lost my Precious (mostly Persian, grey/white) after 18 years to cancer on 6/2/09. I was living in an apartment, and since I got my disability REALLY did NOT have the funds to pay for the non-refundable pet deposit, OR the major adoption fees charged these days. I was SUFFERING an increase in my chronic depression, crying all the time, just LONELY, & just felt totally INCOMPLETE without a kitty companion!! I was still grieving over the loss of my Precious terribly! I had ALWAYS talked all the time to my Precious, well ALL my cats all my life, and they were VERY good at responding in ONE WAY OR THE OTHER!! Either, verbably, or physically. At last I found I was soon going to be able to move in with a friend who I KNEW would not ask too much rent (if actually any) of me. So I went to her and told her how I was suffering, and although I have Precious' urn sitting on my desk, it just wasn't the SAME talking to her now!! She told me "Well I FIGURED you WOULD have a cat when you moved in!!" So I got very excited because SHE and her whole family DO NOT LIKE CATS!! So I asked again was she PERFECTELY SURE it would be alright for me to have a cat there with her, and her only requirement was the cat not get on HER bed!! THAT VERY WEEKEND had been "FELINE EMANCIPATION DAY" at the Charleston Animal Society. For 4th of July all adult cats were only $17.76 to adopt!! So I took off fast as I could get there to see if my love was waiting on me!! At the animal society, I asked 2/3 of the workers WHICH cat they had that had the LEAST chance of being ADOPTED!! The oldest, disabled, or just one that NO ONE SEEMED TO WANT!! EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM RESPONDED WITH "OH, THAT WOULD BE JAZZ!!". I said lets go see her!! They had told me she was a REALLY BIG GIRL and everyone was afraid they COULD NOT FEED HER!! She had been there 2 months, and after first glance, no one even wanted to MEET HER!! Talk about judging on LOOKS!! (How dumb huh??) She INSTANTELY came right up into my lap and allowed me to hold, pet and cuddle her!! It was love at first sight!! Jasmine is a BEAUTIFUL, large, brown Tabby. She is the MOST, LOVING, SWEET, AFFECTIONATE, AND DEMOSTRATIVE KITTY I HAVE EVER HAD. AND she TALKS to me ALL the time!! I LOVE HER!!!! WE ARE THE PERFECT MATCH, 2 GRUMPY OLD LADIES, WHO ARE REALLY VERY LOVING AND AFFECTIONATE!! I will ALWAYS do my BEST for her and could NEVER give her up for ANY REASON!! If we become HOMELESS, we become HOMELESS TOGETHER!!

Bio:
During the adoption process I found out she had orginally been adopted as a kitten from the old John Ancrum SPCA, which is now the Charleston Animal Society. Her first Mama had her for 7/8 YEARS and then said she could "no longer AFFORD her!!" She HAD asked on the bottom of the form, to please call when/if Jasmine got adopted, because it broke her heart to have to give her up. So I did and she actually came over to visit! AS SOON AS SHE GOT IN THE DOOR, she poured a WHOLE BAG of cat treats on a PLASTIC BAG for Jazzmine!! I WAS APPALED!! But managed NOT to say anything, just WATCHED IN HORROR!! THEN when Jasmine had ATE THE WHOLE BAG OF TREATS, she proceeded TO CHEW ON THE PLASTIC BAG!!! The woman just looked at me with a deliriously huge SMILE and said "Oh my baby just LOVES chewing on PLASTIC!!" NOW WHAT KIND OF PERSON IS IT THAT DOES NOT KNOW THE DANGERS OF LETTING YOUR PET, INFANT, OR CHILD CHEW ON PLAY WITH PLASTIC!!!! I was so SHOCKED AND APALLED!! FORTUNATELY, she left QUICKLY afterwards, and I immediately snatched up the plastic bag, and told Jasmine "there will be NO MORE OF THAT!!" THIS is the ONLY bad habbit I've had trouble BREAKING her of!! She will hunt down and find ANYTHING plastic to chew on!! First Mama was several inches shorter than me, (I'm 5'4") AND must have been around 300/400 pounds herself!! So I could see she might think Jasmine's weight was OK!! Also it seems she worked a lot, went out with friends, and spent VERY LITTLE TIME OR ATTENTION on Jasmine!! Also she was free feeding commercial dry food AND canned food!! Well and plus the treats she thought were OK to give her a whole bag at a time. This means Jasmine was alone, lonely, and bored, no companion animal, no toys (because FM didn't think she "played", and only FOOD to console herself with. No WONDER SHE WAS OUT OF SHAPE AND FAT!! POOR BABY!! Her first visit to MY VET, she was 17 1/2 pounds. As he suggested I planned to cut out almost ALL treats and put her on a diet. The only treats I gave her were the ones for teeth, vit supplement kind. I IMMEDIATELY put her on a high quality diet dry food!! Well she gained up to 21 pounds on only 2/3 cup of the dry diet food A DAY, by her next vet appointment!! I was GUILT RIDDEN, I had ONLY MADE THE PROBLEM WORSE!! So now she is on a high protein RX food from the vet, very expensive. She has only lost 1 pound in 3 months. HOWEVER, she is LOOKING MUCH DIFFERENT. When I first got her, she could not walk even 5 minutes, and her belly dragged the ground when she stood up! NOW she can actually break into (somewhat) a run, jump up on things, and walk around for at least a 1/2 hour at a time. I am PLANNING to SLOWLY wean her off the canned RX diet food onto a home made diet of particially baked chicken thighs. With additives of course. Here is a link to the web site that I think is VITAL for EVERY CAT OWNER TO STUDY!! http://www.catinfo.org I HOPE to see MUCH better results in her weight loss, but I AM going SLOWLY & carefully. NOW, you can see a SLIGHT definition where her "waist" is susposed to be. Her belly is about 4 inches up off the floor. First Mama said she NEVER played, so I immediately bought toys and made her play for AT LEAST ah hour every day!! I now take her out in the yard, (with me right there) and she (reluctely) will walk around and at least jump up and down on the screen door meowing to get back in!! I DON'T GIVE IN!! I figure EVERY LITTLE BIT helps as long as she is MOVING and at LEAST her heart rate is being raised!!
