Arrival Story: Maya was the offspring of one of the countless ferals who roam the area around our small hobby farm, sporadically fed by more than one set of neighbors, though rarely claimed, certainly never neutered. We had seen her, or another with her markings, off in the distance even as young as a couple of months, hunting for mice and voles. It was summer; we were used to seeing tribes of cats passing through our property; we let her be.***
It was Thanksgiving eve; it had snowed, was probably snowing still. Wood fire burning, sun had set, warm and cozy inside, we were lulled into a quiet peace, anticipating a day of relaxation away from the hustle bustle of our retail business.***
Then we heard her, a plaintive wail coming from the direction of our snowy woodpile stacked on the north porch. She was probably about 4 or 5 months old, lustrous black and white coat thick from living out in the encroaching cold. But possibly she hadn’t had to deal with so much snow up to that point; she wasn’t liking it.***
When our little dog of 18 years passed, we had said we wanted no more animals. It was too hard to say goodbye to them, but also we were spending more time on the road those days; it didn’t seem fair to the dog or cat. We missed the companionship, though, and here we were faced with a dilemma: a young kitten, the onset of winter, and on the eve of a holiday celebrating giving thanks for all the blessings we enjoy. We took her in.***
The deal we made with her and ourselves was that she would be an indoor/outdoor cat. We installed a cat door so that she could come and go as she pleased. A fact that was not always pleasing to us, however, as she would occasionally come in at 3:00 in the morning, and would sometimes bring her nighttime snack with her…And her snack was not always already dispatched. More than once we were up in the wee hours chasing mouse through the house! ***
As often happens in nature, when there is an explosion in the population of one species – in this case, cats – there will be a corresponding explosion in another. Then it was coyotes. Maya was with us for two wonderful years in which she had the best of both worlds. She interacted with us and had loving, food, warmth and safety. But she still had the “wild” in her, and loved to be outside in all weather, hunting and communing with nature. She could climb trees like a monkey, jumping from branch to branch; used to give her human mom heart palpitations! Unfortunately, though, she apparently wasn’t fast enough one day. We were never really sure if the coyotes were responsible, but we’d seen evidence of other kills, including cats – thankfully not her.***
She was sorely missed. And her memory and the manner of her passing has prompted us to keep these two new kittens as indoor cats only. Though when the snow passes, we’re building an outdoor cattery!
