Mommy was in the hospital this morning

My mommy hurt her back pretty bad last week. All because of her really terrible mattress on her bed. She can't afford a new one, she said they're too expensive. But she's gonna have to do something because this was the worst I've ever seen her. She rolled out of bed last week and she said a nerve must have pinched her lower back. It just got worse and worse as the days went on and finally yesterday was the last straw. By last night she couldn't walk upright and the pain was all the way down her knee, into her pelvis up to her fingers, etc.

So after a night of crying in agony she had her sister take her to the urgent care at the hospital this morning. They took x-rays and she doesn't have anything wrong with her disks, it's spasms and pinched nerves. So they gave her medicine there, some prescriptions and gave her a shot in of morphine in the fanny. She said that felt nice!! Not the shot, the morphine, MOL. I don't know what that is but it made her happier so that makes me happy too.

Now she's just nauseas but feeling someone better. Me and Finney never saw her like that before. Every time she walks, moves or breaths for that matter she crie out in pain! My poor mommy always has something going on. She says she hates her body, it's very uncooperative. So if we're not on here a lot the next couple of days, that's why. our typist really can't sit here for too long right now.

But we just saw that Harrison might have IBD now so mommy wants to keep checking on here in case they need us. Mom is gonna go back and lay down and rest for a bit. We'll check in later on when she can sit here for a few minutes.

Purrs that Mom starts getting some relief right away. Maybe your Mom could get one of those foam egg crate thingies (Mom can't remember if they have a real name) or that memory foam stuff that she could put on top of the old mattress. At least to buy her some time in saving for a new one. Purrs for Mom's health, Skylar and family

Hi everyone! Ooooh Blizz! So pawsome to see you back! We'll go and friend little Snow. Hi Skylar, mom tried EVERYTHING! Egg crate foam thingy, memory foam topper for the mattress, board underneath the mattress, etc. It's not working.

OMC! Siggy! Where the heck ya been? We've missed you big time! Hi Tilly! How's the baby doing? Tabbies drugs weren't bad this time. Uh uh. They made my mommy stop crying. She said it was so bad at the hospital that a couple of people had to go into the x-ray room and help her lay still for those few minutes because it hurt so bad. So for awhile, she's taking 'em. Otherwise it's intolerable. And with all of mom's other usual pain; daily migraines, fibromyalgia and so on...she has a REALLY high tolerance for pain. So ya gotta know how bad this is for her to cry out and go to the hospital. She NEVER does that.

Hi Mr. D, Zeke & Moe Moe! We love you guys too and we've been furry good for the last couple of days. And you wanna know something funny? Poor mommy has been hardly able to walk but me and Finney have had the super duper zoomies several times a day! Probably cause it got cold here and we're feeling energetic. It makes her laugh even if she's hurting. She says "glad someone feels good"! MOL

Lacey: sometime back the Papa had a bad problem with his back, and a friend recommended this book. Basically, it's a series of exercises that work on the muscles which usually are the real culprit causing the pain. It DID work for both my Papa and his friend. We no longer have a copy, but it's available at Amazon for about $11.00. This link won't be clickable, but you can cut and paste it: http://www.amazon.com/Bad-Back-Book-Jerry-Wayne/dp /0918024250/ref=tmm_pap_title_0
Also, she might consider getting just a plain memory foam pad, and sleeping on the floor for a while.
Purrs and hugs

Just read your comment above - hadn't seen that your Momma had tried the memory foam. If she doesn't get relief soon, she might want to try the book - it has worked for others.

Thanks Sleeper. Yes, it really is the mattress. Yes momma has a bad back already but the mattress is in really horrible shape so that's what caused it seeing as how she did it as soon as she got out of bed one morning. But we'll check out the book too, thank you.

Right now she's getting mad at me because I keep walking around her legs and trying to trip her. If I do that, it will be all over!!! She said "Lacey if you trip me, there's nobody to take care of you, so knock it off!" Whoopsy!!

Lacey, that is a good idea. Sleeping on the floor for awhile. Mom and Dad did that years ago when they moved and the bed was thrown away (on purpose). Mom remembers after a couple days her back was feeling a million times better.
Purred by: Lacey (Catster Member)

September 17th 2011 at 6:31 pm

MOL, yes but I don't think tripping her and making her break something is the way to get her down there Zoe. MOL. She did try that already too. She's tried it all. Floor is too hard, even with the foamy thing and the blankets on it.

Ingen I agree, we need backs for stuff. Lots of stuff!

Big ouch! Hoo boy. So sorry to hear about it. I know there are going to be furrs that disagree, but years ago when Mom was having issues related to stress they gave her muscle relaxants. She says they really helped--that is, until she became allergic to them.

The other thought that crossed her mind is chiropractor. Grandpaw had a pinched nerve from sitting on his wallet. The doctor fixed him up.

Sending purrs that your Mom feels better really soon.

Hope that this one posts.....I had disc surgery when I was 30....and recovered nicely but it takes times. I know that yours is different but back pain is one nasty creature that likes to hang around. First, ice your back for about ten minutes, never use heat as it will spread the problem. Then, lie down with legs elevated on a pillow. When you sleep, try using a pillow between your legs. You shouldn't be lifting until the pain goes away....so no picking up your kitties....no matter what. They will come to you for loving. Yes, it is painful. i had two children and this pain was stronger.
No long trips until you feel better. Sitting in one position is hard to do. Hope you feel better soon but be patient.....

Thanks everybody! Thanks Kally Kat and Pipo & Minko for the cute graphics! And thanks to the ones who sent us a POTP. I'm sure it'll work on mommy, just like us kitties. Mommy had a rough night, very stiff. She's trying to walk around a little bit so she loosens up. Taking a shower was tough.

Don't worry guys, she knows what to do. The hospital told her but also, when my mom was 18 years old, she had a brand new car and an old man went through a stop light and hit her. She was so mad! She went into the windshield and was bleeding and she got out and yelled at him for wrecking her new car. MOL.
So back pain is nothing new to her. It's just been a long time since it's been this bad.

Wanna hear something funny? She went downstairs to sit on the porch and look at the birds and the patio chair was so comfortable for her back, she brought it upstairs and that's what she's using right now to be on the puper. Grampy gave her one of his canes too. MOL. She said she'll use it in the house but not outside. No way.

Hi Purrcy! you have a really good point there. If I trip her, I can't get fed. So I'll be more careful.

Oh no, I missed this yesterday. That sounds really painful! Back problems can be the worst, mom says. We're sending lots and lots of purrs for your mommy. Purring also for her to find a new mattress, somehow! Mom says stress can exacerbate back problems (your mom probably knows that), and sometimes even aspirin helps because it's an anti-inflammatory. Purrrrs and hugs!

Oh Lacey, we are so sorry to hear that your meowmy is hurting. We don't really have any recommendations, meowmy's grandmas uses a board on top of her mattress, but that would be as bad as sleeping on the floor! Maybe you could use the foamy thing right on top of the box springs and not even use the mattress. Meowmy can't handle a soft or worn out mattress either because of lower back pain. Hope she starts feeling better soon, we are sending lots of Texas sized purrs.

Thanks Normy and Harrison! Yeah, mom can't sleep on either a too soft mattress or a too hard one. Kinda like goldy locks! MOL. Her's now has a big dip in the middle on both sides of it. So even if she turned it over it's still messed up. She's funny cause she's in a lot of pain but she's mega ticked off that she can't go out and finish painting the new fence they put up a couple of weeks ago. She painted one side last weekend and it looks great. She did it on a nice day like this and said it was fun to be out there. She's disappointed but determined to get her back better. Grampy's cane is actually helping her a lot to take the pressure off that side when she walks.

She tried to take a nap and this time it was Finney who was bugging her. Don't worry Harrison! We're gonna help you and your tummy problems out buddy. Did your mommy look up the side effects for the prozac that you're on? Make sure it's not the meds doing that to you first. Always check your meds side effects before assuming its your own body doing it!

If your Mom can't afford a new mattress, maybe she could check to make sure her pillow is the right size. If the neck is out of alignment, it can cause problems for the whole spine.

How you feeling today??
We forgot to tell you but when I was young and my family could not buy me a bed, my dad used to put a sheet of plywood under my mattress to make it harder, it worked, and I could keep my mattress for a bit longer.
hugs to you :)

Hi everyone, mom is doing so-so. Still walking with grampy's cane because it helps but still in a lot of pain right now. So we won't be sitting here too much. She's only checked her email and Catster very briefly today. She's pretty ticked she can't go and play in her garden. MOL.

Just so you all know, I don't think there is a suggestion here she hasn't tried already. Mom had a car accident when she was 18. An old man went through a red light and that was the beginning of back problems. But apparently mom can work in the garden, dig up the yard and whatever else just fine. Been doing it for years without any problems. Not so for the bed of h-e-double toothpicks. It's just the way it is. Nothing is helping with that anymore.

We forgot to mention earlier that mom did go and see her chiropractor that she's been seeing for years. But because she's really changed and pretty much rushes her patients out, she made mom worse. Then when mom called her the next morning she said to call her back in an hour and she'd squeeze her in. She knew mom was in bad shape but she left for the day without saying a word and never called us back. It wasn't a mistake, she's been doing that to everyone lately. So now that she found out mom went to the hospital after that, she's all sorry. Whatever. Mom is too mad now.
