Bones' Byline: Happenings of a Blind Black Cat

Blind Cats CAN See a Future!

My Meowmy asked me to write a diary entry today for a very special cause!

I'm special, 'cause I'm a blind cat. That's not so unusual in our family!

I have one brofur who is blind and one sisfur who is visually impaired. My angel sisfur, Scarlett, was blind while she was on Earth.

Did you know that even 'no-kill' shelters sometimes euthanize blind cats because they are considered 'unadoptable'?
Did you realize that a blind, black blind cat - like our ME and Charcoal - stands virtually no hope of adoption?
That cats can become blind due to birth defects, trauma, untreated disease, and yes, even human cruelty?

BUT...
Did you also know that blind cats love to climb??
That they love to play with cat toys??
That they run and jump and enjoy life JUST LIKE OTHER CATS?

AND...
Did you know that there's a very special place for blind cats? A place where they are treated with love, respect, and care? It's TRUE!

This heaven-on-earth for blind cats is Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary of North Carolina, featured in the June, 2010 issue of Cat Fancy. www.blindcatrescue.com
BCR is the dream and life's work of a very special woman, and the Sanctuary depends on the sponsorships of the cats and donations from caring people around the world.

But YOU can help BCR today and everyday in the Shelter Challenge at The Animal Rescue Site! It's FREE and EASY and it can truly make a difference.

Our Stevie, Scarlett, Charcoal, and ME are some of the lucky ones. They found a loving, caring home, thanks to messages sent to my Meowmy from BCR! Other kitties need the resources only a Rescue can provide.

Won't you help by voting today and every day during the contest for Blind Cat Rescue of NC? (Don't forget to confirm your vote by identifying the animal photo shown after you vote!)

All the blind kitties will purr in gratitude!!

A Step Forward for Eve!!

So many of you have supported Meowmy, Mama Terry and their friends' quest to find Justice for Eve, the sweet kitten who died shortly after being adopted from Okefenokee Humane Society in Waycross, GA. You can read all about Eve on her Catster page:
http://www.catster.com/cats/1086369

I asked Meowmy to update you on a positive development!! A man from the GA Department of Agriculture answered Meowmy's (third) email to that office! He asked for Eve's medical records, saying they were necessary for an inquiry to proceed. Of course, Meowmy sent them right away. So it looks like someone has noticed us!! PURRRRRR!!!

This may take time. (Has the government ever moved quickly??) We promise to keep you updated when we have news.

For all who care about Eve, please take a moment and sign her petition, if you haven't already. It's never to late to take a stand for all the animals still at Okefenokee HS. Thank you for caring so much!!!!

My Gotcha Day

It's been such a busy, busy few days for me!

Let me start at the beginning...

I was born blind. My eyes look normal and react to light but something went wrong in my brain so that I cannot see. My first year or so wasn't very good. Meowmy doesn't know the details of where I was or what kind of life I had, and truthfully, I don't want to tell her. So I'll start last month.

It was along a road in South Carolina where I was dumped in late February. It was SO scary! I couldn't see anything. I was cold and hungry and thirsty. At least a sighted cat could hunt for food but I'm blind. Everything was so loud and frightening!! My skin itched from all the fleas I had leftover from summertime. My ears itched from little creatures called mites. I hate fleas and mites!!

After what seemed like forever, I was picked up and put in a cage. We rode a long time to a place called a 'shelter'. It was pretty scary, too! It smelled bad, and it was so loud! Barking dogs and crying cats everywhere! I didn't know if the dogs could get to me or not. I didn't eat much because I was scared and I got very skinny.

I guess that's why they named me Bones. I was on something called Death Row. Black cats are often never adopted. Some people still think we are bad luck. Imagine that! And a blind black cat...pretty hopeless...I was at the top of the list to be PTS. That doesn't sound good...

Then on March 4, an amazing thing happened. A kind, sweet lady named Emily rescued me! She put me in a nice carrier, and we drove a long time. She talked very kindly to me, and she petted me a lot. When we stopped, I changed cars. Now a wonderful lady named Jennifer was driving. She was so sweet to me, too. We drove for a long time. I took lots of cat naps.

When I woke up, Jennifer was taking my carrier out of the car. I sniffed the air. This wasn't South Carolina any more! It was Georgia.
Another lady carried me inside, talking to me the whole time. She said she was my new Meowmy!!!

I had a Meowmy!!! Wow! Later I found out I had a Purrdaddy, too.

It took me a few days to believe I was safe. At first I tried to hide a lot, and I didn't eat much. Meowmy took me to a nice vet who gave me more medicine for my skin troubles and got rid of the nasty mites in my ears. Now I'm not itching any more!

Soon I understood that I didn't have to be afraid any more. Nothing would hurt me here. I'm sleeping in my own cat bed or with Meowmy and Purrdaddy. I have lots to eat and a big house to explore. My brofur Ashley is my new best furriend. He's very kind to me.

All my life, I'd heard about forever homes but never had a real one. Now I have lots of brofurs and sisfurs and a Meowmy and Purrdaddy who love me a LOT.

I may be a little black kitty but my heart is huge, and it's growing bigger every day now that I am HOME and I am LOVED!!!
