Called the SPCA about Dave the cat who was advertised in the paper. (A gray male cat who liked dogs and other cats.) He'd been adopted so I said thanks anyway. But the person on the phone said,"Wait, we have lots of cats!" I said, "I know, but I had my heart set on getting a gray male. " She replied, "We have two gray males!"" So we went up to see them and there he was with his HUGE paws and extra toes and we adopted him on the spot.
We think he was abandoned. Someone found him living in a wood pile and turned him in to the SPCA. He was only about 5 months old when we got him. He had earmites that required surgery and a terrible respiratory tract infection. He had 3 extra toes removed too that were growing in weird. Still has a few other extras that don't seem to give him trouble. What a charmer. We adore
Well, on November 1st, 2006, our beloved little guy went missing. We found his body a few days later in a wooded area across the street from our house. We are bereft.
He was with us just shy of 3 years and won our hearts immediately. My partner gave him to me for Christmas in 2003 and I often told her he was the best Christmas gift ever. I also always said, "He brings me joy every day." He really did.
Sterling was a beautiful silver-gray cat with fine, soft fur, HUGE front feet and extra toes. He never outgrew sounding like a kitten, had a unique purr, and was a happy little guy. He loved hanging out by our neighbor's pond behind our house. He was the terror of the local rat population and helped keep the vermin count down.
He adored our dog, Jimi, and often walked beneath him, laid with him and groomed him. For reasons known only to Sterling, he named Jimi, "Joaquin." We swear he said that name one morning! He loved to grab our hands with his front feet and groom them too. He was like a living teddy bear - loved to snuggle, even sleeping under the covers! He's the only cat I ever met who loved having his belly rubbed and he was always so gentle. He was a stellar jumper and we'd see him on top of the dresser, the refrigerator and even the garage roof. He was having a blast just before he died. Our neighbor had been watching him play on the roof and in her yard, chasing squirrels. He went missing shortly after that sighting.
I recommend the book, "Cat Heaven" for those who are missing their much-loved kitties. A friend sent it to me upon hearing about Sterling and it's a comfort. Jimi and Harley are too.
We're having a stepping stone etched in his honor in a trail that's being created by our local SPCA, which is where we got Sterling. It will say, "Sterling/2003-2006/He brought us joy every day."
