Arrival Story:
We got a call one day from my husband's boss saying this cat he had grown fond of at work was going to be taken to the pound. This pound is known for not keeping cats. My husband is not a huge animal lover but couldn't let this poor cat be put to sleep. She was 1 1/2 pounds when we got her, starving, wary of people and a fighter we found out. First thing she did when we got her was attack our dog and I mean ATTACK his back, biting, scratching, hissing, scared the heck out of us!! The funny thing was, our dog Sam, a malamute, retriever mix with a thick double coat never had a clue Toplock was trying to kill him. His tail wagged the whole time she was on his back. Within a week they were best buddies. I miss seeing them patroling the yard together. She loved curling up on the deck with her Sammy. I have so many memories of my faithful kitty but one sticks out most. At the time I was not too happy about it. I used to keep a pair of shoes on the back deck and one day got my coffee, put my shoes on and went out with the pets. Sam and Toplock were patroling our 3/4 acre fenced yard and I walked around looking for them. I felt something odd squishing my big toe but ignored it and kept walking. I called the pets and settled on the porch. My sock felt really wet so I slipped my shoe off and my toe was bloody. I turned my shoe upside down and a mouse head fell out. Toplock saw the head and started prancing around, she was SO proud of herself! I walked around with that mouse head in my shoe for a good ten minutes. I quit putting my shoes outside the door that day. She lost her beloved Sammy on January 1, 2007 and you can't say animals don't understand death. She was there when we buried him and her behavior wasn't typical. Her meow was different and she acted strangely for a long time. I know she mourned for him. She is now buried next to Sam and as with him we were not prepared for her sickness. It is too painful to rehash but she had to be put down, we found out she had cancer. On September 15th, 2009 with all her family around her she went into a peaceful sleep. I never thought I could put a pet to sleep but it was obvious now she was ready to go. We spent alot of time together at the end and I will forever cherish it. The last week she would climb in your lap to be petted, something she never did. She also hated going to the vet and would make such a fuss. This last time she sat in her bed on my lap and just kept looking at my husband, my daughter and into my eyes. The whole 20 minute car ride she was quiet and intently staring at us. She was such a trooper. Its hard to believe she's gone. She gave us SO much and we miss her. No one was going to give this wild, starving cat a chance and her life was almost over before it began. We are so grateful we were home to get that call and a cat named Toplock came into our lives. We love you Miss Kitty.
