In December, Charlize Theron criticized women over the age of 30 for wearing Hello Kitty clothing, so I’m curious how she would feel about the new intimates collection Sanrio is launching in collaboration with comfy thong purveyor Hanky Panky. Any hardcore Kitty fan knows that Hello Kitty undies are not exactly a new addition to the Sanrio universe (I’m pretty sure I own a pair myself), but never before has the brand teamed up with a major lingerie company to launch a line aimed toward a more mature audience.
Racked reports that David Marchi, senior brand marketing director at Sanrio, told WWD that "a lot of people think this is just a brand for kids and teens, but many women 18 years and older have grown up with Hello Kitty and can relate to the brand in a more adult way."
The fairly innocent-looking collection, which I’m sure will still scandalize someone, reportedly features thongs, boy shorts, camisoles, and chemises, accented with the iconic cat’s face outlined in crystals or made of lace. Items are set to sell for $27 to $98, and will arrive online at Sanrio.com and HankyPanky.com on May 25 before landing in boutiques and department stores this summer.
