Arrival Story: Louie was born on July 8, 1989. I met him when he was 3 years old. He was one of the stud cats in the cattery where I purchased several Birman kittens. He was a greasy little tomcat hiding in the corner of his cage. I used to go to the breeder's home to groom my Persians before I got my own sink, table , and dryer. The grooming table was in the room where Louie was caged. He would pace back and forth in his cage and call mrrrrow. I would sing to him ♪Meet me in St. Louie, Louie♪ . The more I would sing, the more he would call. It was like he was singing along. I really liked Louie, but he was quite shy. If I would go to pet him, he would dive into his little hidey hole. When the breeder would go to a show out of town, I would go over and feed the cats and scoop their boxes. When she was gone, Louie was silent and just barely picked at his food. The minute she would hit that back door, he would start to eat and call again. I always thought it was strange and kind of sad how attached he was to her. The only contact he ever had with her was when she would scoop his box and shove a bowl of food in the cage. She never petted him or played with him. He was just a sperm donor in a cage. Louie lived the first 7 years of his life in that cage. One day, I went over to the breeder's house and Louie was gone. She didn't want to breed Birmans any longer, so she had sold Louie and Miss Valentine, her last breeding pair. She was going to concentrate on Persians. She had sold them to a woman in Northern Colorado who was a Sheltie breeder. She had apparently convinced her that she could really make money off of the Birman cats. Several months later, I was at a cat show and stopped to visit with Michael and Sue. They were Birman breeders who lived in Loveland, Colorado. I told them about Louie and how sad I was that I would never see him again. It was about 2 weeks later that I got a phone call from Michael. " Would you like to have Valentine and Louie?" he asked. He had been running a kitten ad in the Denver paper. When he got home that day, there was a message on his answering machine from the Sheltie breeder asking if he would like to have a pair of adult Birmans. " Go get them", I told him. By the time he reached her, she had given Miss Valentine to a friend of hers. Michael went and got Louie. He told me that Louie was being kept more like a farm animal than a cat. He was in an old wooden shed with torn screens. It was dirty and full of flies. There was a cat tree where Louie had climbed to the top shelf and pretty much stayed there. "Take him, he's pointless," she told Michael. I drove to Michael's home and picked him up. I looked into the carrier and he was huddled in the back all wide eyed and scared. My husband drove home and I held the carrier on my lap. I opened the door and put my hand in front of Louie and started to sing ♪Meet Me in St Louie, Louie♪. I could see him relax. He remembered. He laid his head in my hand and slept the rest of the way home. It was July 15, 1996. I had Louie neutered the following week and he began his new life as a pet. I really didn't think that Louie would ever really be like a pet because of the way he had lived. He surprised me. He was a great pet. I had two of his kittens, Moqui and Chong Li. Chong Li was the only cat in the household that Louie made friends with. They would groom each other and headbutt each other. They were just good buddies.

Bio: Fast forward to December 9, 2002. Louie was sitting in a condo. He just didn't look right. I checked him over. When I listened to his heart, the heartrate was only half of what it should have been. I ran him over to the Vet for an EKG. It was pretty weird and our Vet recommended that I take him to the cardiologist. He was able to see us that day, so Louie got an ultrasound and I was told that his disease was untreatable. So, we went back to our own Vet where Louie was put to sleep. I took him right to the crematory and brought his ashes back home with me. I have always regretted not showing Chong Li his body because Chong was not himself for almost a year after his Father "disappeared". I will always be grateful to Michael for rescuing Louie so he could spend the rest of his life with us.
