Yesterday, the doctor told me i have an upper respiratory infection...

I caught a "cold" from my buddy sam...he got fixed last week at the spca... mom took me to the doctor yesterday because i was sneezing and had a runny nose. The doctor gave me Clavamox 65.3 mg bid for 14 days i think... I will not eat or drink.. and i am breathing with my mouth open! I feel really crappy and mom is nervous! Any suggestions on getting me to drink more... i think mom will try to make another appointment on monday!

You aren't eating because cats won't eat what they can't smell and that's what's most likely going on. Your mom can get some really smelly wet food and try to hand or spoon feed you. Unfortunately, kitties deydrate very quickly and not drinking causes dehydration. Clavamox does take time to work, but it should have started working by now (Sunday). Your mom should certainly at least call and check with the vet. Feel better fast!!

Izzie is right - cats won't eat if they can't smell their food. If her nose is crusted over take a warm damp wash rag and gently clean it away. Sometimes warming up canned food a little in the microwave helps - warm canned food smells a little stronger and may appeal to her more. Antibiotics do take some time to work... hopefully they'll get her feeling better soon. Definitely give the vet an update Monday morning. Sure hope she feels better soon! Purrs!

First try running a shower and steaming up the bathroom, then put kitty in the room for 10 minutes twice a day. This can help break up the mucous. Make sure you can at least speak with the vet on Monday. Your cat can't go too long without food. Try human tuna (packed in water, not oil) and see if that works. Anything smelly because kitty won't eat what she can't smell. If your cat continues to open mouth breath a vet visit is definitely in order and if she doesn't eat for more than 2-3 days then she needs to be reevaluated. You should try to be sure she is at least drinking water every day and if not then a vet visit is needed.

Harvey

There are different kinds of URIs, both viral and bacterial. Antibiotics will work on the latter. Did you get a diagnosis as to exactly what the cause of the URI is? When I took Harvey to an out of town cat show last summer, he refused to drink any water, and I bought a kitten baby bottle and forced him to drink from it. Cats can go without food for a while, but not water. Do hydrate your cat as soon as possible. Definitely see your vet again, and if you don't feel comfortable with this vet, get a second opinion.
