why has my 5yr old female spayed cat suddenly taken to peeing all over our house!

Our 5 year old spayed cat has started peeing all over the house, on any surface, in any room, at any time. She goes on carpet, on wooden floors, in the shower, on the fireplace harth, the tv unit, in shoes, on bags, on any soft jumper or coat left down etc Often it is right in front of us! Sometimes she squats, other times she stands upright and does it backed up to the surface.

She has always gone outside using the cat flap for 5 years and there have been no changes to her daily routine or to our home. there have been no new pets in the home in the last 5 years. we took her to the vet which after 200 euro of tests, we were told there was nothing wrong with her... how do we stop this? should we try another vet? or is this behavioural?

Chances are it's behavioral. What your cat is doing is marking her territory. If she goes outside, she may be in a "war" with other cats out there, and when she comes back in, she's marking her territory so they know it's her's. Also, what may seem an insignificant incident in your home life to you may have more importance to her. I would be willing to bet that this is all behavioral. It sounds like there were many tests performed on her, so I wouldn't change vets unless you are not satisfied with your current one. Clean up all spots she uses with an oxy or enzyme based cleaner or have it professionally cleaned. If she's gone on rugs, it could have soaked through and odor remains. Ask your vet about a short course of what we call "Cat Prozac" to settle her stress. You will need to work with your vet to get "into her mind" so to speak. Good luck. I know this is unpleasant.
