There are many discussions on this topic in the Catster Forums. For example, see:

About buying higher quality foods (NOT Friskies, Fancy Feast, etc):
www.catster.com (www.catster.com/forums/Food_and_Nutrition/thread/456991)

About canned/wet foods:
www.catster.com (www.catster.com/forums/Food_and_Nutrition/thread/450427)

Our household prefers/recommends in order: Innova EVO, Wellness, and Nutro Natural Choice (more readily available at major pet stores).

The first ingredients should be meat. There should be no by-products, wheat, corn, menadione bisulfite complex, exthoxyquin, dyes, colors, or anything labeled as "animal" instead of turkey, chicken, duck, beef, venison, etc.

Grocery store brands are definitely not very good foods because they contain so many chemicals.
Some good brands of food are:

Innova
Solid Gold
Innova EVO
Wellness
Felidae

There is also a raw food diet you can consider which is a diet based on what a cat would eat in the wild.

Baby Jewels

I asked my vet the same question yesterday...she told me NOT to give my kitens wet food cause they can not get it off of their teeth. (It is ok if you clean your cats teeth and get regular cleanings from your vet.) She said that as long as they eat the dry food they are alright.
