What can I do to keep Zombie's hernia from getting worse?

I took my cat Zombie to the vet for an upper respiratory infection. We have that under control now but while we were there, the vet said he had a small hernia. But it was small enough that we didn't have to worry about it right now, but eventually it needs to get checked out. I want to know what I can do to keep it from getting worse until I have the money to get it checked out. He's a male, two year old, maine coon.
