What breed is best if I want a cat that's laid-back and loves to cuddle but also doesn't shed a ton?

I want a sweet cuddler but I just can't deal with excessive shedding. I am aware that the oriental breeds don't shed as much due to the lack of an undercoat but I know nothing about these breeds' temperament.

I can't recommend my breeds, Ragdoll & Persian, for the not shedding purpose but honestly all cats are different and there are no guarantees on temperment. My cats are all laid back but they do not all love to cuddle. Allie will lay in my arms for hours but Chelsea who is actually her full sister from the same parents prefers to be touched only on her terms. She might sit in my lap if she chooses but I can't cuddle her and both were raised by me from 8 weeks old exactly the same as each other. Those 2 are my extreme opposites with every other personality in between. I have 10. A cat will become what it will become no matter what the breed and shedding can be controlled with regular brushing and a healthy diet. You might find what you want by adopting a shelter cat who already has a definite personality fully developed instead of a kitten who will grow up to be whatever he or she chooses to be.

As usual, Allie gives excellent advice. As a former animal rescue/humane volunteer, I can vouch for the fact that a cat will be whatever it wants to be. I have 3 rescue cats with 3 very different personalities. Delilah was a biter when I adopted her and 4 years later she is a snuggly lapcat who doesn't even mind being hugged. It's OK to not have a purebred kitty. Even within a breed, cats do not conform to behavioral standards. I have a Maine Coon who is shy and independent. He'll sit on MY lap and headbonk ME, but no one else and will hide whenver we have guests. Heaven forbid someone other than me tries to pick him up. A friend has a Siamese who is everyone's friend and will sit on your lap and "talk" to you by the hour. Please consider adopting a shelter kitty. If you outline your wants and needs to the staff, they will try their hardest to make a succesful adoption for you and a kitty.

If you DO want a purebred, us Burmese have very short close lying hair that feels like silk. We are also love bugs and a bit more active than Persians and so forth, but not as hyper as Orientals, or the truly speedy Abyssinian and Sphynx. . Lots of us will fetch, but mostly we adore our people and play nicely.
Meowma has found that most of us DO conform to the personality description on CFA. She hasn't seen a cranky, over shy, or crazy acting one yet. Tonkinese are much the same as Burmese. Siamese are sweet, but do 'talk' a lot.
We have shelter cats around too and love them , but purrsonally feel you can be more confident about what you are getting personalitywise with a purebred from a reputable breeder if you are not going to be happy with 'just whatever' personality or physiccal attributes.
