It sounds like your kitty my have fleas and the tiny black bits are dead fleas or flea dirt (flea poop). One way to check is to get a white paper towel or napkin, get it wet, and wipe each cat down all over it's body. If the paper towel comes out clean it's probably not fleas but I would still want my vet to have a look at it because normal kitty dandruff is white like a human's, but if it comes out orangish, pinkish, or brownish you can pretty safely bet that fleas have been biting them and leaving behind little specks of blood. If it is fleas your vet can prescribe spot treatment for them which is usually the safest and most effective treatment for a multi-cat household. Trying to treat it yourself with home remedies or store bought products almost never gets rid of the infestation and could result in accidentally poisoning one or more of your cats, always best to consult their vet.

Izadore (Izzie)

Just adding to Cali's excellent advice, it does sound about 99% like your kitties have tiny livestock. When you go to the vet for their Frontline or whatever flea/tick preventative they use, ask them what they think about a "flea bomb", which is not an explosive device but a spray like Raid. If they sell you one, remove all animals, humans, fish and small mammals from your home and set it in the middle of the room. You will also have to thoroughly vaccuum anyplace, including your bedding and their's, where they lay. Remove the bag from the vaccuum , seal it in a trash bag and put in outside. You can vaccuum up some flea powder before you do this, but just to be sure that the fleas don't find their way back into your home, put the sealed bag away from the house. You will have to be vigilant, especially at this time of year, and watch for scratching, red bites (even on yourself) and that black "flea dirt" you and Cali spoke of. The drops are only part of the treatment! 8o)

Put a little rubbing alcohol on those black specks. You will see its dried blood as in a uh scab. Fleas bite drink blood leave. A sore or blood crusted scab. Some call it flea dirt. You have an infestation of fleas. They suck on their host for 2 -3 days then fall off and lay hundreds of eggs that hatch in nine days. Do the math. Oh yeah. Fleas carry tape worm. You might notice that you or your cats feces have what looks like living rice trying to make a get away. These are segments.
