First things first congratulations on your new furbaby - thank you for taking him in. Has he seen the vet yet? Always a good idea to take a newly adopted pet to the vet for a good check up. There could be a medical reason for urinating outside the box - trauma alone can set it off. Second, it's only been a couple of weeks - adjustments to a new home can take some time - he has been through a trauma. Best advice, start with the vet, keep him confined to a small area of your house with a clean box until he becomes fully secure in that environment before you give him the run of the house, and then just lots of love and patience. Also, make sure you clean the areas where he pees thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner - if he can still smell it - he will continue to pee there. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

It really could be a variety of things -- my cat has FLUTD so that's my first thought. Is he peeing a lot or a little? If you see him do it is he straining when he does so? My cat NEVER pees outside the litter box but he tried to when he was partially blocked from the FLUTD. A vet had to put a tube in his urethra to clear it.
Otherwise, he could be uncomfortable in his environment? Maybe set out a second (or more depending on the size of your home) litter box or change litters to see what he likes best.
