If your cat normally purrs and normally does not make that sound, then I would be worried. Any sudden change in behavior is usually a sign that something is wrong. Is it possible that your cat has been injured? Please watch you cat for other behavior changes or signs of a problem. Is she hiding, sleeping more than normal, acting aggressively, not eating or drinking, not using the litterbox normally? If so, then please call your vet as soon as possible.

Please take your cat to the vet ASAP! This is not normal. Your cat needs to be seen so that your vet can examine her and treat her accordingly. Hope she gets better soon!

If you have a dog, you should tell the vet this,
it is possible that the cat is mocking your dog!
Cats usually purr when they're injured to soothe
themselves.
But you should still please take her to the vet's
office as soon as possible. This could be a serious problem.

If your cat goes outside at all, I would suggest making a vet appt, ASAP. Kitties that hunt (birds especially) and eat them are suseptable to "LUNG WORMS", one of the signs is a cough or bark sound, like trying to clear their throat. Please have her tested for this.
