My cat has suddenly stopped meowing. She opens her mouth but either no sound comes out or she croaks. Why?

Normally my cat is very vocal, and meows a lot (and loudly). Yesterday we noticed that she's unable to make loud noises any more; a little horrible squeak comes out instead. Does anyone know why this might be happening, or how I can treat it?

Please take your cat to the vet. There are countless problems that could be going on, and there's no chance we can help over the internet even if we were vets, which we aren't. We're just people who love kitties.

I agree, take her to the vet as soon as possible! I have no idea what would cause that!!!

Minuit AKA Miss Meany

A vocal cat who is all of a sudden unable to meow, needs to see a vet. Infection of the throat, mouth, teeth or nasal passage can be the reason why she doesn't or can't meow. Something possibly stuck in her throat she tried to eat, a quick exam will rule this out. Upper respiratory infection could also be a possibility.
Getting a vet check will rule anything out medical.
Have a good one.
