Any time there is a change in an animal's behavior, it's time for a trip to the vet. Maybe your cat has a urinary tract infection or he's afraid of something. Have there been any changes in your household (new pets, new baby, new partner, additional family members staying, etc.)? A trip to the vet is necessary to rule out any medical problem. Hope kitty is okay.

The other poster is right. When I did animal rescue and cats were brought in, at least half of them parked in the litter box even if they had a bed or a blanket in the cage with them. We figured that they were stressed by all they'd been through. Your kitty's box is offering a safe haven for him. It's probably high-sided, smells like him and is in an out of the way place where no one can bother him. The problem is that he may start pottying somewhere else. The solution is to research your lifestyle for changes, however inconsiquential to you, that may be upsetting him. Children (or adults) who tease or harrass him or are just loud and boisterous, workmen in the home, visitors, changes in your schedule, things like that. As the other poster said, he may just not be feeling well. If the behavior continues, take our advice and at least phone your vet.
