Is continuous dry cat food ok? I keep some out and fill the bowl every time it runs out. Should I be doing this?

If your cat is at an okay weight, I would not be concerned about this.

But if you are at all concerned about your cats eventually becoming overweight, have your vet reccommend an amount of food to feed your cat every day. Measure that amount of food, pour it in the bowl in the morning and leave it out all day. Before bed, pour what is left over into the trash.

Continuous dry cat food will not keep your cats' teeth clean, so daily toothbrushing with a special cat toothpaste and toothbrush is essential. If you have time, you can also check out raw diets for cats so you never have to clean your pets' teeth and you will be feeding the ultimate meal,

Our cousin Cole eats nothing but dry food, and he's fine. He loses his fur in the winter but he's an outside cat and his dad says it's because he is stressed out by being inside during the cold weather. In our house, we eat a lot of wet food and we're OK, also. Our doctor says it just makes our poop stink more, that there isn't really any advantages to a wet food diet. We are all self-feeders. Our bowls are always full and we monitor ourselves pretty well.

Measure out daily allotment of food and leave it out until it's gone. You do not need to add more food to the bowl until the next scheduled feeding time. By measuring out the recommended amount of food you are allowing your kitty to only get it's daily rec. calories. By offering more food than that, you are looking at a potentially overweight cat in the future.

For the record, canned food does not make your stool stink worse than dry. Quality of food will do this. There are also benefits to feeding canned food. It makes us feel fuller faster and also adds much needed moisture to our diets (extremely important in male cats, kidney failure cats and cats with chronic urinary tract problems.
