i'm living in china with my cat, but there's no cat litter, what could i use in it's place? And a scratching post!
i'm living in china, there's no cat litter! There's cat food and some toys, no scratching post or anything like that. What could i use in place of cat litter and also what could i use for a scratching post?? Also she's a kitten, only maybe 1-3 months, we found her on the street as a stray so we don't know her exact age... Someone said sand, but i don't know.

How about shreaded newspaper - or do they have the shreaded bedding for hamsters/guinea pigs? Perhaps you can order it from an online pet distributor - do they deliver to China? You can make a scratching post out of an old piece of lumber and cover it in carpet - there are some plans for making these available on the internet.

Do you have sand? that's what the kitties would be using outside if they had it. I would get some of that too if you can-if you cannot use newspaper or anything else. You can make a scratching post or use cardboard-they have stuff like that for sale on-line-if you can have stuff delivered. Or maybe you can get a piece of tough carpet and attach it to something and gently show the kitty how to use it. When I got my kitties home, I scratched the post with my hands and they kind of caught on-don't force their paws, but like showing them how to hide their potty stuff in the litter box, gently brush their paw over the surface. good luck!

Kitty Pryde is right. You can get sand from a builder and that is good as cat litter. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't clump and you have to replace it more often than the clay litter but its cheap and cats love using it.
Scrating posts are pretty easy to make with some old carpet or sissal rope and some wood. Here are a couple of sites that show you how to make scratching posts.

Good luck and its great that you rescued the little kitten as she wouldn't have lasted long on the streets

Right now I use a baking pan [aluminim foil or regular one that is about an inch and a half high, you can use a lasgana pan] and newspaper along with shredded paper.
I put the newspaper down to cover the bottom and then I cover it with the shredded paper so my kitten gets used to covering what she pees on. I do change it often, probably 3 or 4 times a day, but it's a lot safer than clumping litter never use this at the age she is if she is younger than 1-2 months since she may eat it. But the sand does sound good, but like paper it will have to be changed often. I feel that it may not be a very good litter replacement though since it may get in her eye or stuck somewhere she can't get it off, at least with paper it doesn't stick nearly as well.
