Most cats don't like to be held. You might be able to teach him to tolerate it. Try just holding him for a few seconds at a time. When you hold him talk to him and give him a quick pet. Try this a couple of times a day. Then just let him go and reassure him. He may have a history that you don't know and being held might not have been pleasant to him. Cats have their way of showing their love. They rub against you, play with you and can give looks that you will learn which mean I love you too.

Georgie

Just a thought but maybe if you held him a different way. Georgie only likes to be held with her front paws over your shoulder. Like in her picture. You have to pick her up like you would pick up a little kid reaching up to you.
She won't tolerate any other way!

Izadore (Izzie)

Rex and Georgie give very good advice. Did you know that cats don't like to have their feet off the ground? They feel trapped and not "in control" when they are picked up and held especially when they don't want to be. My 3 cats are lap cats only when they want to be. If I pick any of them up and try to hold them on my lap, they sure don't like it. They like ME, just not being forced to do what they don't want to do. Don't take it personally. Your kitty love you, he really does.
