Does anyone else see their cat(s) as family members and not just a pet?

I treat Tammy like she's my baby and love her like she is. My family thinks I'm crazy, but I know I'm not alone in this...

Good grief, if you aren't going to treat your cat (or dog) as a member of the family, why even bother to get one (or more?). People who don't care for animals make me very nervous. Now, having said that, there are people who take "loving" their animals to an extreme like a lot of stars whose animals have a wardrobe that makes me jealous, can only drink bottled water, have their own nannies/servants,chef, etc. You can never love your animal enough. But that doesn't mean an outfit for every occasion. It means training them, socializing them, keeping them safe from harm, keeping them healthy and spaying or neutering them. Tell your family that you pity them for not realizing how important being loved and loving an animal is.

Everybody including my co-workers knows that my cats are my babies and are more important to me than most humans are. If I tell my boss I need a day off because a kitty needs to go to the vet, it is the same as somebody else's children being sick. Even my boyfriend who has been with me since long before the first kitty (Allie) arrived knows he would get kicked to the curb if he suddenly developed an allergy to cats. Of course they are family members!!

Absolutely. I quite often refer to my cat as my little girl or my daughter. She means the world to me. Your animals ARE part of your family. Everyone should feel this way & take having animals very seriously. You aren't even close to being alone in this. Many people feel as you do.

Yes, absolutely. It makes perfect sense, because our pets provide us with some of the most important things we receive from family - love, affection, companionship.

I'd do anything for my two cats. People sometimes warn that I'll "spoil" them if I give them too much, and I reply that they *should* be spoiled! It's not like I'm trying to prepare them to go out and be productive members of society haha! Their entire world is an apartment and a patch of grass, and they're there by my choice...I owe it to them to make their lives as comfortable, interesting and safe as possible. I let them be finicky about their food and happily fret over news toys and beds for them. I maintain a good relationship with their vet, and am planning for the time when my cats are old and need extra help.

That's the way my family always treated pets, even when I was a child. If nothing else, we owe it to them for the years of love, devotion and service they give to us.

YOU ARE NOT CRAZY! You have to believe this! Cats are more that just pets! You're not the one that's crazy! I don't think that your family has ever had a cat. They wouldn't know.

Opal

You are most definitely not alone, my cat Opal is with me 24hrs a day she sleeps on the pillow next to my head and we talk to one another all the time, and especially after I lost my 13 year old daughter in 2006 Opal never left me alone and whenever I would start crying she got right up in my face and gave me little "kisses" to make me feel better she IS a person to me and she always has love for me as I always do for her. and I would say that you wee crazy if you didn't think of her as a family member. anything that lives with you and shares your life is "Family" not like a toaster that just sits on the counter...
