Beloved in/outdoor 14 mon. boycat gets tangld in brkaway reflective collar/loses it what to do?-reflect paint?, harness?

He is black, I want him to be seen at night. I'm thinking of anything that will be safe for him. Some break -away collars don't break away and twice today he came in with his leg caught in the collar - meaning he can't run quick. This particular break away is my extra - only to be used when he loses yet another easier-to break away (reflective) at $10 a pop. I'm thinking is there non toxic reflective paint to splotch him with, a non-neck wrapping reflective body harness or can I get his ear pierced with a reflective tag along the lines of a cow?
Any suggestions other than keep him indoors - I heartachingly don't subscribe to such a life for my babies- is very appreciated and of course I would and will do my homework on anything b/f I try it. Thank U.

Perhaps your heart aches at the thought of keeping your "babies" inside, but you should consider it, at least at night. Having been through this twice after rescuing outdoor kitties, I can vouch for the fact that losing them on the road, or just losing them will make your heart ache even worse. I put collars on my Ernie until he lost so many of them I just gave up and had him microchipped. This was how they identified his body and called me when he was hit by a car a few years ago. If your black cat dashed across the road in front of a car or is chased down by a coyote, dog or other predator including people who don't like cats roaming loose in their yards and set traps for them, you could spray paint your entire cat with Day-glo paint and it would not save his life.
