Got this in an email today from Truth About Pet Foods. It says some pet foods contain an ingredient, as they phrased it, that is associated with Pentobarbital and euthanized cats, dogs and horses. They even have a list of the foodies, gee, what a surprise, Science Diet is on there:

FDA testing found four pet food/pet treat ingredients to be associated with pentobarbital in dog food; "Meat and Bone Meal, Beef and Bone Meal, Animal Fat, and Animal Digest". What pet foods/treats use one (or more) of the four risk ingredients? Here's a partial (but very long) list of the pet foods that contain the FDA Four.

Background: Pentobarbital is a drug used to end the life of an animal. It is commonly used to euthanize dogs, cat, and horses. Several years ago the FDA tested dog foods (no cat foods were tested) purchased from retail store shelves for the presence of the drug pentobarbital. From the FDA website "There appear to be associations between rendered or hydrolyzed ingredients and the presence of pentobarbital in dog food. The ingredients Meat and Bone Meal (MBM), Beef and Bone Meal (BBM), Animal Fat (AF), and Animal Digest (AD) are rendered or hydrolyzed from animal sources that could include euthanized animals."

IF federal food safety laws were actually enforced with pet food, any pet food that contained pentobarbital (thus a euthanized animal) would be considered adulterated and thus prohibited. But, sadly, the FDA does not enforce federal food safety laws with pet foods (read more about illegal pet food ingredients).

So...we do not know with certainty that every batch of pet food containing the ingredients Meat and Bone Meal, Beef and Bone Meal, Animal Fat, and Animal Digest contain the drug pentobarbital or a euthanized animal. We only know that from FDA testing, these common pet food and treat ingredients are associated with the drug pentobarbital and thus a euthanized animal and we know pentobarbital would ONLY be in a pet food ingredient if that ingredient contained a euthanized animal (this drug would never naturally be in any pet food ingredient). We also know that IF these pet food/treat ingredients did contain pentobarbital, they would be deemed adulterated according to federal food safety law (that's if anyone of pet food regulatory authority bothered to follow federal law).

So...what pet foods contain the FDA Four?

The following is not all inclusive. And the list could change if any of these pet foods removed the FDA Four ingredient. Please feel free to add to this list in your comments AND certainly share this list with your friends and family. Big Thanks to Kelly H. for helping me compile the list of pet foods!

Remember: I am NOT saying the following list of pet foods contain pentobarbital or a euthanized animal. I am saying that the following list of pet foods do contain, according to FDA testing, an ingredient that was determined to be associated with the drug and a euthanized animal.

Hi Bumpurr wave

Do you have the link to where this was reported on the FDA website? I went to the FDA's website and couldn't find anything about this but then it's not always easy to find things on there.

Unfortunately, this issue isn't new and has been going on for years. cry

It's also interesting that all of the foods on the list are dry foods . . .

Thank you for the link to the article on Truth About Pet Foods.

The article doesn't have any link(s) to the FDA website where this current study/investigation is reported. The only FDA link in the article is to a 10/29/2009 FDA study of 2 dry dogs foods. My question is, where did the info in this article come from? Is the information current?

Not saying it isn't true (sadly, it's been all too true in the past) but if the FDA has recently compiled a list of foods that currently may contain Phenobarbitol, I'd like to see it.

I don't eat any of those foods but many cats and dogs do and before everyone panics, it would be good if Truth About Pet Foods provided the link to the FDA's website so this can be confirmed.
way to go

I bumped up the thread I posted a couple of months ago about this subject; yes, there is phenobarbitol there, but they found NO DNA of pets AT ALL in the samples, which makes it at least a little better. So maybe " cats, dogs, and horses? " shouldn't be in the title of this thread. This is a good article and I was surprised no-one seemed to pay it any mind when I first put it up. I found it when I was specifically looking for a reference to euth'ed pets in foods, because I had seen rumors.
I do disagree with this statement
**********we know pentobarbital would ONLY be in a pet food ingredient if that ingredient contained a euthanized animal *********
I disagree with that because I think it's important to realize that phenobarbital is not used only or even mostly to euthanize animals,it's THE most widely used anticonvulsant anticonvulsant in pets, livestock, and people, and though it's mostly been replaced it's still widely used as a sleeping pill for people. It's a well known fact prescription meds can be found in measurable amounts in most water sources, so its presence in pet food could be due to water or another source than carcasses.
There's still plenty of things to be conerned about in the article, though; probably out of all the info I was most intrigued by the section on marketing, 'natural' foods, and so forth.

highly doubt they put euthanized pets in pet food anyway. i do remember fda testing samples of pet food and they didnt find anything. even though some people seem think they do anyway.

I'd like to know what "associated with pentobarbital" means. Does this mean pentobarbital after it's been broken down? Is the presence of chemicals "associated with pentobarbital" necessarily connected to the use of euthanized animals in pet foods? We all know that there are lots of yucky things in pet foods, and human foods as well (antibiotics in meat, fecal matter in your Big Mac), but don't you think that if pet food companies were using dogs and cats in pet food that SOMEONE would have leaked this information? I mean, not only is it gross on numerous levels, it's unhealthy for an animal to eat its own kind--look at Mad Cow Disease in cattle and Kuru in humans, for example.

As for horses--I know that horse lovers hate the idea of horse meat being consumed, but I personally don't have anything against it, if the animal is not ill and is slaughtered in a "humane" way that doesn't involve drugs. (Sorry, horse lovers.) I've read that horse meat used to be a staple in the diets of dogs and cats, but that around the end of the 19th century, people started finding this distasteful (pun intended), and that's how kibble came about. And now there may be horse meat in kibble...what goes around comes around.

I can't believe that there's no regulation of pet foods in the U.S. Japan is slightly behind the U.S. regarding pet food and pet care, and I'm pretty sure that pet foods are laxly regulated, if at all, but I would have thought that the U.S. would be more stringent.

And yes, Science Diet is not the best food in the world. On the other hand, when there was that mass pet food poisoning incident a few years back, several premium foods were tainted, while the SD I feed my cats was not on the toxic list. My kitty family was just lucky.

Harvey, cut and paste my link, it explains the situation more fully. I don't know what the term "associated" means to the writer of the (very condensed and edited) email, but I think , scientifically speaking, it would mean compounds that could be or are usually found when a substance has been present, but they are NOT the substance. Lets say, tons of candy wrappers, chip bags, pizza boxes left lying around a room are often associated with teenagers, even if none are there.
