Kitten Corner > in appropriate sucking??

My Kizmet suckled on my earlobes from the moment I got him until he passed away at 10 years old. it's only inappropriate if you are uncomfortable with it. I never minded, although at times I got annoyed at 3am. LOL. It comforted him and made him happy. It was his thing.

Now, if it's happening a lot, or if it's interfering with meal times, then it could be an issue. But lots of cats suckle on one thing or another. (Believe it or not, Kizmet, when rooting around for a good place to suckle, found my nipple. I loved that cat more than my next breath, but that felt a little too weird! haha)

Benjamin, who came to me at 7 weeks, spent his first days meowing like crazy, rooting around for a place to suck. It broke my heart to see him so distressed. He found my armpit one night, and calmed right down. He's 3 now, and he still does it pretty much every day.

So Ben has a favorite toy, his 'Wormie'. Sometimes he plays with him, but as he's gotten a little older (he's 3 and a half now), not so much. He will mainly pick up Wormie in his mouth, hold him there, and start meowing in a low voice. Nothing else. Usually in the middle of the night, but sometimes I'll hear him in the kitchen doing it while I'm watching TV.

Is this another version of prey behavior? Like he's caught him and he's announcing it? He never really brings it anywhere, just drops it after a minute or so. And he doesn't do this behavior with any other toy. Just Wormie.

I've had some cats that just tolerated each other for their entire lives, and never really interacted. It happens, despite our best efforts to the contrary!

I haven't been on in a while, and I am so sorry to hear about Bumpurr. I know for sure my Callie and Kizmet were there to welcome him to the Bridge. hug

Behavior & Training > Tristan hasn't kicked his habit of biting! Please help!

try positive reinforcement. it's the only thing that worked with Ben. when he would bite, I would say 'No bite!', immediately withdraw my hand, get up, and ignore him completely. eventually, he began to stop when I would say 'no bite!', and I would immediately praise him. sometimes the stopping was coincidental, but no matter. eventually he got the message. you have to be consistent, every single time.

obviously, getting out of bed isn't an ideal solution, but you get the idea.

Kitten Corner > I feel like a mean mom!

Thanks everyone! I feel a LOT better knowing I'm not the only one!

I think it's going well. last night I fed them with the door open so they could see each other. they eyed each other, but ate. cheer

Tonight when I came home I gave them both wet food at the door, but little Maizie wasn't interested. she wanted to explore! so I did a room exchange. let her in the bedroom while Ben explored her sanctuary. He even ate in there after he sniffed around. Good boy!

she gets kinda scared when she's out, so I put her back in her room to relax for a bit. she put her back up when she saw Ben, but that's normal I know. when he hears her play in there, he sits at the door and tries to look under it. so funny.

I also like that she doesn't meow much or run for the door when I open it. that's her place, and she feels safe there. I'd feel worse if she constantly wanted out!

so yesterday, I brought home a little sister for Ben. I've read that setting up a sanctuary room for the new cat is the best thing to do, and then have gradual introductions. so little Maizie is in a small room with all her stuff, plus a warm carrier bed, toys, and scratching post. I've been doing things like the Sock Exchange, getting them used to each other's scent. they are both interested, but don't freak when they smell each other's scent. I guess that's good.

this evening, I got two bowls of wet food, and opened the door to Maizie's room. I placed the bowls away from each other, but still close enough so they could see each other. they kept an eye on each other, but ate! I feel like this is a good sign.

I have to work this week, and then I have a few weeks off. so this week she'll be in the room a lot (I keep her in there at night so I don't have to worry about her getting into something or her and Ben getting into an altercation). I know she doesn't know anything else, the room is larger than her enclosure at the shelter. But I still feel awful! She feels safe in there for sure, and when I go in to sit with her, she just loves on me. Ben is okay, keeps an eye on the door, but does hiss when he manages to lay eyes on her. I know that's normal.

my sitter will be coming by this week while I'm at work to spend time with her, so she's not too lonely.

Does anyone have any other advice? I guess I just feel guilty leaving her in there. She doesn't know anything else, but still. it'll be better in the long run for her and Ben, I think. we just all have to get through this week! I wasn't planning on adopting til I had time off, but I saw her, and it just happened. cloud 9

Thank you from me and Ben. Ruffy, we are not close enough to the Cat House, but I have them friended on Facebook. I think they are wonderful!

I guess I'm not sure if I'm ready. It all just seems so new. I guess I will know our new addition when I see him. (or her!)

Choosing the Right Cat > A sibling for Ben
Benjamin

As some of you know, my Kizmet passed away this past weekend. He was 10. Ben is nearly 3, and has lived with other cats his whole life. When he arrived he had a brother and a sister. Both have passed on now, and he's very clingy with me. He really loved Kizmet. Playing with him, just being around him. I do want to get him a sibling, although not right this moment. I am thinking about what would be a good fit for the both of us when the time comes, does anyone have any advice? He has a dominant personality, loves to play and cuddle.

I'm not sure if he'd be 'less threatened' by a small kitten, or more compatible with a cat his own age. I know that whoever comes into our home will take some adjustment for sure. I'm also not sure when we should get a new sibling. Sooner? Later? I don't want to upset him more with another upheaval in the house, but he gets nervous when I'm gone and is clingy when I come home. He'd never been alone in the house until Kizmet went to the hospital last week. He's definitely not a loner cat!
