California Natural Chicken Brown Rice and Weruva for cats with urinary problems? My female is allergic to fish, fish oil, and some grains which cuts out a ton of foods. Can't afford to feed an all canned diet so they will be getting a small amount of dry. They were on NB Duck Green Pea but didn't work for them. She's not doing well on the prescription diet.

Food & Nutrition > Right Food for problem plagued cats

Can anyone make some suggestions as to what food to feed my cats? One cat has IBS and the other has food allergies (I believe to fish, fish oil, food additives and carbs such as potatoes, corn, soy). They both were recently diagnosed with urinary problems. My female cat had a urinary tract infection and my male cat had a high urine pH and crystals. At the time they were diagnosed they were being fed Fancy Feast (the no wheat gluten, corn or soy kinds) and Natural Balance Duck and Green Pea dry. I have tried many kinds of foods including: NB Duck wet (made my female cat wheeze and itch), NB chicken and green pea wet (made my male cat throw up daily), Blue Spa chicken and turkey wet, and Nature's Variety Lamb and Chicken raw. Nothing seemed to help with the itchiness and her yeasty ears. Plus the ones that contained more carbs made my male cat sick. Argh! They are currently on Purina One urinary tract formula and Purina Vet chicken wet diet because of their urinary problems but my female cat is itching like crazy. Can anyone recommend both a wet and dry food that might work? I know most people would say not to feed a cat with urinary issues dry food but I don't feed them that much (1/8 cup per meal) and they like to have something to munch on. It's so hard to understand why they have this problem, they get wet food in their diet plus drink water every day. Sigh.....

Raw Food Diet > Variety vs. Allergies

In the case of my cats, I have tried a lot of different varieties of foods due to one of my cats having allergies and my other cat having IBS. Unfortunately I think my allergy cat is allergic to fish, including fish oil. And Nature's Variety raw contains salmon oil. She would still itch even on the raw diet. My vet has told me that if you give cats a lot of variety, in some cases it causes them to be picky eaters. Which was the case with my cats. She suggested feeding them one type of food for a couple months, then switching. Of course try and feed foods that are from the same company. I take out the beef, since many cats are allergic it. Stick with chicken, lamb, duck.

Well the vet called me back and said that Mason's urine pH was high, around 8.0. Normally it should be around 6.5. So he is now going to be on Purina One urinary tract health wet and dry. The ingredients make me cringe, but what he is on now is obviously not working for him. My vet said she's had a lot of patients who have had good luck with this type of food, so hopefully all will work out.

I think one reason vets recommend it is that for many cats who might have other issues (such as kidney problems), Science Diet offers foods that are lower in protein. But I still think there are better foods out there that are more beneficial for cats. My cats love the Blue Spa Healthy Gourmet which is flaked. However it contains brown rice and sweet potatoes which didn't agree with my IBS kitty but he still loved the stuff! They also make a sliced version of the healthy gourmet.

I would recommend grain free Wellness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Natural Balance or Blue Spa Wilderness wet food. Science Diet is not good food, it contains wheat, soy and corn. I would stay away from it.

I did try the limited ingredient wet but something in it caused him to throw up. It also caused my other cat to wheeze.

I forgot to mention that I feed them the Fancy Feast varieties that are recommended for diabetic cats. They have no wheat gluten, corn or soy and are low carb.

The vet did check out his heart rate and also his pulse in his hind legs and said he couldn't find anything abnormal. The only thing that seemed slightly odd was he said normally when a cat comes into the vet and is anxious their heart rate is elevated, like around 180. Mason's was around 165, but he said that wasn't anything to be too concerned about. I know Fancy Feast is not the best food but I have tried Natural Balance, Blue Spa and Nature's Variety with no success. He would throw up every week on that stuff. I also tried Wellness but he refused to eat it. Another problem is the fact that my female cat has food allergies so in addition to not feeding them food with corn, wheat or soy, I also don't give them beef or fish.
