This is a very real concern that we're only becoming aware of in the last few months at the practice I work for. Tick season is in full swing now and with all these fatal tick borne illnesses its a good time to have an indoor only animal cry

Cat Health > Anal Glands?

In my experience it is FAR easier to express a dogs anal glands than a kitty's and even when Bella needs hers expressed I let my boss do it. It IS possible to do on your own though just extremely difficult.

I can't find anything on cats, here is a video showing you how to express a dog's anal glands and cats are done basically the same, with more hissing and growling! puppy

Cat Health > Methigel and FLUTD.

A few of our clients use Methigel and seem to have decent results, though they do not compare with a prescription diet food.

I have a cat with Interstitial Cystitis (not Bella, Max) and we use a combination of Adequan injections and Royal Canin SO. I saw you say that they have "horrible ingredients" but if they don't affect your particular cat adversely wouldn't it be better to prevent painful crystals? I have known hundreds of cats at our clinic on the different urinary diets and not one has ever had a health problem because of it. Hills C/D does make them fat though ;o) Max eats his SO happily and has eaten the food for 3 years or so sans incident.
