Cat Health > Fiddlehead's URI

Hi Fiddlehead, I suffer from chronic sinus infections after having untreated URI's for a couple of years and know how miserable you feel. My previous owner went into a nursing home and hadn't been looking after herself or me a long time. So now my sinuses are pretty damaged and I am much more prone to URI/sinus infections than normal. Here's what mum and I have learned that will hopefully help you too.

The azithromycin is a good antibiotic for URI's and I also took that initially when I had bartonella but it will take 4-5 days for you to start seeing the congestion clear with any antibiotic. If you seem to be getting worse rather than better you may want to ask your vet about trying a different antibiotic and maybe taking both at once. Some bacteria are resistant to some of the antibiotics to be sure the vet should take a culture (q tip in your mouth and nose) and do a feline URI panel and bartonella test. The culture takes about a week to get the result so if you are not responding ask the vet about starting a second antibiotic now until you get the results and then you can stop one.

The steam and warm compresses are a good idea. Another thing that helped me was a drop of saline solution in each nostril a few times a day which has a similar effect to the steam. Your vet can give it to you or you can also get the same thing for humans at the pharmacy.

You may not be pooping because you are not eating much and having no sense of smell sucks. Try raising your food dish six inches so that you don't have to bend down to eat as you get more congested when your head is down. Even when I was congested I could still smell chicken livers. Mum would boil a tub of chicken livers for a few minutes and chop them up into small pieces and I'd drink the broth and eat the livers. I also liked beef or fish done that way. Chicken it didn't seem smelly enough so when I was really congested I'd ignore it. I did realise that if mum was eating chicken it was food so maybe she could try feeding you food from her plate?

I would breathe through my mouth but was able to sleep OK, probably because I was like this for so long in the past. One thing you can try is for your mum to sit on the sofa but leaning back just a bit so you can lie on her chest so that your head is on her chest and higher than the rest of your body. Doing that just after a steam/warm compress/nose drop session would be good. This position is the best for the congestion to drain out of your nose and you'll be able to breathe better and hopefully get some sleep.

I hope some of this works for you, Purrs Freckles

Losing patches of fur can also be from a flea allergy or ringworm. Your best bet is to take Mango to a vet and they should be able to help figure out what it is and suggest treatment.

If they think it is food or environmental allergies there is a Catster Cats with Allergies group that would be worth joining to discuss foods etc

There are a couple of possibilities. The bacteria in the infection could have been partially resistant to the Baytril so it didn't get completely killed off and has come back. The other possibility is that the crystals in his urine are causing the issues you are seeing. Take him back to the vet and get them to do a blood and urine check. If the blood test shows a high level of white blood cells which means an infection ask them to add on a culture to the urine test so they can see what bacteria it is and confirm an antibiotic that will be effective against it. In the basic urine test they should be able to see if you have a lot of crystals that could be causing an issue. This should allow you to figure out what's going on and the vet to be able to advise the right treatment options for Macy.

It may be worth getting a consult with a dental specialist vet. I can't remember the name but sometimes cats mouths react against their teeth which can cause them to loose teeth or have inflamation. If that's what he has he may actually be better having the remaining teeth removed but you'd want to get a consult with a dental specialist 1st.

If he does lose the rest of his teeth he'll be fine. Minxy had her last few teeth removed when she was 20 and still loved her dry food and could eat it with no problem.

If the dental vet thinks he can keep his teeth without any ill health then it sounds like you are doing all the right things. They might have some other tips that you could use and advice on check ups.

Good luck with Rory and I hope he gets to keep his fangs.

Sprinkles, if you are actually diabetic I'd go with the lower carb ones but if you're not you should try out the others as long as carbs are fairly low down on the ingredient list. Are there Trader Joe's in LA? If so their own brand cat food is very good quality ingredients and very tasty and only 59 cents a can. I only eat wet food and I like the TJ food as much as the other premium foods that are 3 times the price. It does have rice as about the 4th ingredient but that is probably a small amount.

My vet agreed that it is more important to eat any cat food rather than try to force you to eat kidney food if you don't like it. I also liked Fancy Feast and it was the only wet food I'd eat. One prescription kidney food I liked was Purina NF which was very tasty and your grandpa's cat may want to try that for his dry food.

You can usually find copies of the actual insurance poilcy on their websites so hunt around to find those to get to the fine print. For the ASPCA one most of their policies treat an illness from the previous year as "pre-existing" unless you go for their top policy that for Freckles would have cost $90 a month.

Thre's also a website http://www.petinsurancereview.com/index.asp where customers rate and review pet insurance companies which is another good way to check them out.

I used this site to identify potential insuarnce companies and then went to look at their sites, review sample policies and I contacted them with specific questions where I couldn't find what I needed.
