Long story short, she took in a stray cat and at first it was terrible for her, she didnt think she could keep it, but she actually got used to it and built up a tolerance and now isnt allergic to her cat in the slightest.
Still allergic to every other cat in existance though MOL!

Behavior & Training > Indoors or Outdoors - Cruel or Kind?
Caduca

| Purred: Thu Oct 15, '09 7:50am PST | | | | | | Here in the UK very few people keep cats indoors.
That being said, I keep mine as indoor cats (which people give me no end of grief about, for the exact same reason you mentioned - they say it's cruel)
I keep Caduca inside because she is feral, when she goes outside she reverts back to being completely feral, but if I keep her inside long enough she becomes much more tame (to the point where you wouldnt think she was feral.) An evening outside and she becomes like a wild animal again.
Gremlin has never been outside (minus a couple of accidental escapes) and I'm a strong believer in they can't miss what they never had.
Anyway, my point is it depends on the cat. Some cats are completely happy being indoors all the time, and with enough toys and mental stimulation, there really is nothing cruel about it (and it is 100% safer) but for other cats, they never adapt to being house cats properly, so for them, it is kind of cruel.

| Purred: Tue Oct 6, '09 1:28am PST | | | | | | Given that he's 2 years old, I wouldn't really say that neutering him will change this behaviour - was he completely fine up until recently? It sounds more like something in his environment has upset him.
Cats are so sensitive to change, you mentioned that he used to like your boyfriend until he moved in with you - my money would be on either that having maybe set this whole thing off, adding to that change the fact that your other lad is now 6 months and probably hitting puberty. Unfixed toms generally don't like being close to other unfixed toms, your older lad could feel his territory is being threatened - amplified by the stress of the change.
Don't blame yourself though, these behavior problems can just as easily affect neutered cats as it can unneutered cats (it is just more likely to affect unfixed ones) For instance I fostered two neutered brothers who were lovely cats, no bad behaviour in the slightest until 3 months down the line I bought a new computer chair and they were both terrified of it for some reason and it set them off spraying round the house like it was going out of fashion!
As to your 6 month old little lad, as he gets older he may join in the territory battle so it is up to you if you want to neuter before it happens.
You can try other things, such as increasing resources (which is what is important to cats and what motivates them to spray) things like litter trays, food, areas to sleep - these are the things they fight over, so that is something you can look into.
I hope it all sorts out for you though, and you get your happy family back!

Behavior & Training > He\'s Forgotton About Me!!

| Purred: Thu Oct 1, '09 5:39pm PST | | | | | | Aww thanks for all the advice and reassurance everyone! It hasn't even been two weeks yet (ok, so I may have over-reacted slightly ) but the jealousy tips worked wonders - I'd been so bothered about him feeling left out that I had been practically following him round showing him with love!
Following the advice I just sort of ignored him ignoring me and spent a ton of time with Yzma and sure enough my little man decided HEY what about me, next thing there was massive cuddle with puurrrs
Now the novelty is sort of wearing off a little, I know have two beautiful furbabies snuggling on my lap instead of just one. Perhaps it was just the two of them sorting out where they stand with each other? And there was mummy feeling like nobody loved her!

She has caught me in the sink and in the bath before now (while they were empty of course) and I will drink from running taps on occasion, but that's about it - unless there is a fish tank involved, then I will shove as much of my arm in the water as possible!!

| Purred: Thu Oct 1, '09 5:28pm PST | | | | | | My partner and I have been having a discussion (read: arguement!) over whether or not our new baby is in fact long haired, or just a typical fluffylicious kitten. I'd love to hear some opinions from the experts?
Also, is there any ways you can tell whether they will end up long-haired while they are young? (she is just over 8 weeks old now) as I know with my Gremlin, he was mega puffy as a kitten, but is more medium long haired now he is older, just with a gigantic raccoon tail and what I like to call angel curls on his tummy and mane - oh and impossibly long toe fluff!
Oh and any tortie owners out there - is there any truth to the "naughty tortie" tales, because she does seem to be quite the little madam already?

I don't do it near mummy because she takes them off me if she sees me.
I do sometimes bring mummy presents though, but she never keeps them - just lets them go again, silly thing!!
Once I brought her a baby thrush that I took from a nest and mummy spent weeks feeding it every couple of hours till it had all those wonderful feathers. Then she took it outside very early in the morning and would you believe the mother thrush actually came down and they flew off together.
A week later I caught the same thrush and killed it, then brought it back home to mummy. I've no idea why, but mummy was so sad when she saw it.
Gremlin is rubbish at catching anything except for moths and spiders, and even then he cries for mummy to catch it for him.

| Purred: Sun Sep 27, '09 2:08am PST | | | | | | I'm really fussy about water I hate it when it is too cold so won't drink from a freshly poured bowl, I won't drink it out of a plastic bowl at all, only glass bowls or actual mugs (yes, human mugs, I'm eccentric) so would this be a good thing to look into because I know I drive mummy mad with being finicky? | | | | |
