Matilda
Leave me alone. |
| Purred: Thu Nov 5, '09 11:18pm PST | | | | | | I've fed both. I like that Natural Balance is easier to find, and I like the company more than Diamond (makes Taste of the Wild). TOTW has more protein and is less starchy than the grain-free versions of Natural Balance. Matilda did really bad on the Green Pea & Duck Natural Balance, but all 3 of the cats did well on the Natural Balance Ultra formula. Mine all eat TOTW now and do well on this too. NB is higher in calories than TOTW. I like the ingredients of TOTW more than the NB, but both are good! | | | | |

| Purred: Tue Sep 8, '09 8:47pm PST | | | | | | For dry foods - Taste of the Wild, Chicken Soup, Diamond Naturals, Natural Balance, Kirkland Signature (costco brand, not sure if they make a kitten or all-life-stages formula though), Healthwise (same company that makes Innova/Evo), Authority (Petsmart store brand). I'd feed any of those before feeding something like Purina or even Iams. They also tend to be more calorie dense (less filler), so you don't feed as much and the bag lasts much longer.
For wet food - I wouldn't be as picky. Any wet is better than no wet at all for kittens. With multiples you can save money by buying the larger size cans and splitting them, rather than individual 3 oz sizes.

| Purred: Sun Sep 6, '09 5:57pm PST | | | | | | Yeah, it's a bad idea to let any pet cat outside.
There are plenty of ways to satisfy her hunting instincts inside. Buy a laser pointer, or Da Bird, for her to play with inside. You can even put in a little enclosure on a window so she can sit and look outside. Letting her outside puts her in the path of other animals, people, cars, poisonous things, etc. The best you can do for her is to keep her inside and spend time playing with her.

Cat Health > Kitten in heat

| Purred: Fri Jul 3, '09 5:00pm PST | | | | | | Spaying can be expensive, but caring for kittens is a lot more expensive (think of those future vet bills, yikes!)
Chloe was spayed at 5 1/2 months and she hadn't gone into heat yet. The shelter I volunteer at does spay/neuter surgery as soon as the kitten is 2 lbs, so they can go up for adoption at 3 months old.

Matilda
Leave me alone. |
| Purred: Fri May 29, '09 10:33pm PST | | | | | | My cat's name is Matilda too Only she's a chunky kitty.
I agree with everyone else. Cats come in all shapes. My 2nd cat, Chloe, is 7 lbs and has been since she was 8 months old (she's almost 2 now). My vet actually said she was almost a little overweight because she was starting to get tummy fat (I was afraid the vet would say she was underweight, so that was a shocker, lol). I think people are used to overweight pets.
Wet food is best for cats, the dry food is addictive to them (kitty crack!). I still feed it, but in very small quantities.
I looked at your pictures and you don't look too small. Ask your vet what he/she thinks You could also check out petobesityprevention.com.

Food!!! |
| Purred: Wed Apr 29, '09 8:01pm PST | | | | | | Wet food is extremely important to a cat's diet. I am much more willing to sacrifice ingredients for a more affordable wet food. Some of the least expensive wet foods that have ingredients I am happy with are: Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Natural Balance, Authority, and Eagle Pack Holistic Select.
Some of the higher end dry foods still end up being more $ per feeding than those wet foods I just mentioned. I feed 50% dry and 50% wet (they each get about 1/4 cup of dry food in the morning and then 3 oz of wet food at night). I buy the 6 oz size cans and split them to save $ (for example, I can buy a 6 oz can of Natural Balance here for $0.99, but a 3 oz can would be $0.74. The two cats who don't eat leftovers share a can, and the third cat who will eat leftovers (refrigerated, of course), gets the leftover portion in the can the next day.
If I were you, I'd feed a more affordable dry food so that I could increase the wet food to at least 3 oz a day. The dry food I am feeding now (Taste of the Wild) is grain free and has pretty good ingredients, and it's really inexpensive compared to other similar brands.

| Purred: Sun Feb 15, '09 9:37am PST | | | | | | Try buying the 6oz Natural Balance cans and splitting them, it's cheaper that way. You can buy lid covers. So if the 6 oz can is $1 and the 3 oz cans are $0.80, you'll be feeding your kitty each time for $0.50 instead of $0.80, which is a big difference at the end of the month. Natural Balance is a good food, other affordable wet foods with good ingredients are Chicken Soup, Nutro Natural, Nutro Max, and Authority.
I would feed 3 oz twice a day for a cat that size. That should be plenty! The weight for the cat depends on its frame, what does your vet say? I have a big 11 lb. cat that should weigh about 8, but I have a 7 lb. cat who would be overweight if she weighed 8 lbs. Their frames are totally different.
You could feed a tiny bit of dry food in addition to the wet if you want, but I'm talking only about 10 pieces or so. The ingredients in Iams are very poor, so you'll want to switch to a better dry food if you keep feeding any dry.
