See here for tips on how to safely lose weight: http://catinfo.org/feline_obesity.htm

Dry foods are too high in calories and carbs and some have junky ingredients. Don't bother with so-called weight management foods. They're still high in calories and the carb content may push you into developing diabetes.

Canned food or RAW will help as well as daily excercise. Just like for people: good diet and excercise to lose weight. It's suggested to feed about 20-25 calories per pound of ideal body weight. You need a big weight loss so try for an ideal weight of say 20 pounds to start and when you reach that, aim for an ideal body weight of 15 pounds, etc. If you lower calorie intake too much too soon, you can develop a serious condition called fatty liver. Weight loss takes time so don't expect results quickly.

To find the calorie content of foods, see the food charts (scroll down page to find the links). The number listed on the food packaging isn't very accurate.

Get Well Soon > Vetsulin Insulin is being recalled! URGENT!!!!!

Sneakers, it's more than likely that your insulin dose was too high causing you to become hypoglycemic. Any insulin can do this, not just Vetsulin. What was your starting dose? Lowering to 3 units twice a day isn't much better and can still cause your blood glucose to become very low (hypoglycemia). Oftentimes vets will prescribe a too high dose and not realize that it can do shrug Cats are not dosed by weight like dogs are.

Have you seen FelineDiabetes.com? If not, check it out. There is very good info there on how to best mange your diabetes way to go There is a hypo sheet there that lists common signs of hypoglycemia and how to treat.

Are you using "as fed" numbers to calculate out the nutritional values? Using the gauranteed minimum/maxumum numbers that are listed on the package are usless. Asking the pet food company doesn't always help since many will not give you the exact as fed numbers. With as fed numbers, you can then calculate out exactly how much protein or fat or carbs is in the food.

That's where the famous food charts come in way to go The charts lists the exact nutritional content of many brands of food, both dry and canned.

There are lots of cats with diabetes smile I'm diabetic. A very good web site to learn more is FelineDiabetes.com

Common symptoms are drinking a lot of water, eating a lot of food but always hungry, losing weight despite eating all that food, and peeing a lot and the pee is sticky and sugary smelling.

Ask the vet for a fructosamine test. That is the test that confirms whether or not you have diabetes.

The test for pancreatitis is called fPLI. It's a bloodtest. An ulrasound won't tell if your cat has pancreatitis or not.

It won't hurt to get a second vet opinion. Sometimes a different vet will find something that the first vet didn't see.

Plain raw meat by itself is not a good diet because it doesn't contain all the necessary vitamins/minerals we need. It is ok, however, to feed a little plain raw meat in additionto dry or canned food, kind of like a treat.

To go on a completely raw diet, you must use a proper nutrionally balanced recipeor use a commerical brand of raw food or use a pre-mix.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on Wild Kitty raw foods smile Wild Kitty

It looks like raw food that comes in a small single serve container.

They also have a pre-mix. There are two types, one for boneless raw meat and one for bone-in raw meat.

I don't think clams or conch are a natural food source for cats thinking We don't have thumbs to open a clam shell laugh out loud
