Hello, Hiedi here. All of you that know me know I am a seven year old Bichon female . I hang around the house doing nothing all day and my mom and dad thought they would get me a new puppy. They brought home an eight week old male. I won't let him share my mommy and daddy or my toys. Sometimes I feel like I would like to eat him. My mommy and daddy are upset. Can someone help me?

Heidi have your pawrents had your thryoid or blood work done? It is good to start checking these especially as we get older. My mom has a complete blood work up done at least once a year. It is expensive but it will indicate if there is a physical problem.
Also at our age (7 or so) we do sort of slow down and really don't want to play with puppies all that much but one of these days the puppy will grow up and then you will like him better. Don't give up!

Heidi,
I just got a new 2 yr old sister and I'm around 6 yrs old. Since I"m sooo active Mom wanted a younger pup to match my energy level. It's taken right at a Month for us to figure out who is Alpha - 2nd in line to Mom. With your little brother being so young and small and YOU being Alpha he's really not going to challenge you for awhile. Your Pawrents will need to keep him seperated from you unless they are there to supervise so he doesnt' get hurt.

They can teach you to 'be nice'. Everytime Honey comes near my Mom I PLAY bite her neck only just a tad rougher than necessary. Mom is teaching me to sit while she pets Honey and me at the same time. Now I'll sit on my own and she can pet her without me being petted at the same time. With the toy sharing Mom put up the toys we were fighting over and encouraged us when we played nice with the old worn out ones. After we got use to playing together she introduced the new toys and as long as we played nice we got to play with it. It takes awhile and lots of patience but YOU can be trained to get along with your little brother. He will be so much company to you when things settle down.

Thanks for your help, Tucker Max-Small Paws and Bullett!!! dog walk I have blood work done every year, including thyroid. All is well. smile As far as my energy goes, I am very active, constantly play with my toys, and can do the "Bichon Blitz" with the best of 'em. cheer

I am getting somewhat better . . . I now allow my brother, Pookie, to be held by Mom and Dad and I no longer Grrrrrrr. Sometimes I even jump in their lap and sniff the baby (sometimes with a Grrrrr).

As far as my toys go, he had better keep away or I'll eat, er, get mad at him. Mommy built a playpen in the living room and Pookie stays in there a lot. At first I was angry 'cause Mom gave him 4 of my toys, but now I no longer get upset.

It'll be a week that Pookie is here on Monday. I'll give it more time. snoopy

Thanks again, woof, woof,
Heidi

HEIDI!!!

You've been an ONLY DOG for so long!!! No WONDER you're not too keen about your new sibling!!! I'm so spoiled I wouldn't want to share my momma, either!!! You have been the center of attention for so long that you aren't willing to share the spotlight!!! Who can blame you???

I barged in on my brother Murphy and he didn't like me, either!!! We just kind of co-existed and didn't share much of anything except our momma!!! I have to admit I wouldn't want a new little brother or sister at this point in my life, either!!!

HANG IN THERE!!!

Well I am not completely an only dog. I have a big sister, Penny. She is a cocker spaniel. But she is talking 13 now so she doesn't want to play at all any more. She runs and gets on the bed where Pookie can't go. But she doesn't grrr .

Hi. I am Pookie and I am just a little doggie. My mommy and daddy brought me home thinking that my new big sister would love me, but she doesn't. I really want to be friends with her but I am afraid that she will bite me.

Pookie here. I am so happy! My sister finally played with me! Mom sat on the floor with us and she kept me on a leash in case she had to rescue me really fast. She made me wear a little denim vest to protect me too. We played for about 20 minutes then Heidi said she was getting tired so mommy made us stop for today but she promised we would play more every day till I dont have to wear the leash anymore. I am so happy I could just BARK

Heidi here. I guess the pup isn't so bad after all. I let him play with me yesterday and he was okay. He wasn't worth eating, but I did tell him that I am the boss dog and he rolled over and said ok so I guess he can stay. Mom put him with me for awhile again this morning and he still knows the rules. Pookie, you can live here but just remember I AM THE BOSS!

cheercheercheerThat's pawtastic, Heidi! Of course, it's a lot for both of you to get used to, and your Mom is making sure you take your time. You just might wanna be a little nicer to him. Remember some day he might be bigger than you, and you don't want a "big" brother with a long memory. xoxoxoxoxo Roxie
