Ever since mom and dad started taking care of me a few years ago I've had a strange hacking/coughing problem. My previous care takers said this was pretty normal for me, and neither mom or dad had taken care of cats much in the past, so they assumed it was ok, but they always feel real bad for me when I have an "attack". They assumed it was a hairball, but I very rarely actually spit anything up. I did seem to improve quite a bit when I started eating hairball formula cat food...but I still cough from time to time and we're not sure why. I also wheeze quite a bit when I'm resting...mom and dad always thought I was snoring a little bit. We've just recently learned that cats can have asthma, and based on the symptoms it sounds like that might be my problem. Every time we go to the vet he just brushes it off, but mom and dad area really worried about me so they will probably take me to a new vet soon.
Can any of you other cats with asthma tell me what your symptoms are like? Is there anything that makes you better or worse? How bad are the tests that the vet will do to find out if I have asthma? Is it possible it's worms instead of asthma?! eww!! I don't want to have worms!!

Hi Noisy!

If you do a search online for cat asthma attack, you can see several videos of these in action, and compare to what your cat does. My Mommy actually thought I was coughing when she saw me one day, and looked up cat coughing and found out that oops, I was actually having an asthma attack! eek

But now my asthma is managed with pills, Mommy gives them to me once every 2 days by mouth directly (took a little research by mommy as well; youtube is great for these things!) until she gets me used to an inhaler she bought (which I am already kind of interested in!) What's the difference? Inhalers work in the lungs while shots (yikes) and pills affect the whole body...and cause issues with my purrfectly good organs over time.

Mainly if you find your cat does have asthma, get a good vet (shop around!) who offers you options. Mommy took me to a vet who didn't offer options, only because they told her I might grow out of my asthma, which I did not. Still, Mommy's able to treat my issue with minimal damage to my other organs, which is the best solution for everybody...including MY body! smile cheer
