My 2.5 yr old male cat Sammy had a partial thrombo embolism three days ago. He has been stabalized by the vet and is on Plavix and we are giving him physical therapy on his leg five times a day. Only one of his back legs was affected and he is walking on it now almost normally (a small limp and it's kinda turned inward). I've done a lot of research on this horrible condition and I know it's very grave and his chances of throwing another clot (and it being a big one) is really big. I am just scared to death, waiting for the big one to come. My question for Doc Hunter is have you seen patial thrombo embolisms and is the outcome better for these cats? What can I expect? I cannot afford to get an ultra-sound but my vet x-rayed the heart and said it looked good, although it was maybe a little elongated. He has been so healthy all his life and has NO exercise intolerance whatsoever. Something interesting I have yet to get to talk to my vet about is that when Sammy was around 10 weeks old and we took him to the vet for his vaccinations, after a couple hours of being home we found Sammy favoring his back leg and actually screamed if we tried to examine it. I think it was the same leg that is affected now. We thought the needle he was vaccinated with harmed his muscle or something and we rushed him back to the vet where they gave him a steroid shot. It took weeks for him to recover full function of his leg and he would not jump for many months afterward. I can't help but wonder if that was also a thrombo embolism. If so, he went over two years without having another one! What do you make of that? I am just desperate for some hope on his condition. I am so full of anxiety that he is going to die on me any day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
