 | | | | A yellow taxi pulls up in front of the Scooter home. The driver opens the rear door and Willow pops out of the car, dressed in her pink sweater and matching beret. Simon climbs out after her, straightening his blue polo shirt and adjusting the angle of his straw hat. The cabbie opens the trunk and unloads 2 sets of luggage--one bright purple with pink paw prints and the other a deep blue. It's the very best Catsonite money can buy. Simon passes the guy a crisp, new bill and the driver happily carries the eight bags to the front door. With a wave and a honk, the taxi pulls off down the street.
Simon and Willow are standing at the front door but before he pushes the bell, Si turns to his little sister.
Did you remember your toothbrush? Willow nods.
Did you remember your nausea pills? Willow nods.
Did you remember your sunglasses? Willow rolls her eyes, but nods patiently.
Passport? Tickets? Money? Willow's head is nodding vigorously.
Simon, can we please just ring the doorbell?
Willow's eyes are huge. She's very excited about taking this trip around the world with her big brother, Uncle Wilson, and her best friend in the whole world, Hallie! Her insides are all butterflies and tremors, but it's from the thrill of what lies ahead. She has no fear of anything. She pats her hat to make sure it's in place and smooths down her sweater. After all, she must look her very best at all times, especially today!
Simon takes a deep breath and raises his paw. Imaginings of the journey ahead flash through his mind. It's a big world out there and he's about to see a whole lot of it! It will be hard not to see his mom for such a long time, but he knows this is the experience of a lifetime and he must do it. He inhales deeply and exhales slowly...
DING DONG! Simon has pushed the bell.
Willow tries hard to stand still and not prance. To her, the ringing of the bell is very symbolic. This is the start, the real beginning, the opening round of an adventure she never dreamed would happen to her.
With tingling paws, she waits for the door to open. | | | | |
