Sirius Rising: The Cookies In Cream Chronicles
Pupisode 14 – I Love It When A Plan Comes Together
November 25th 2009 4:34 am

From his vantage point on a rocky peak, he was able to watch the floating doghouse arrive. He called out to his brother and sister in excitement.

On a narrow trail that started at the river, Stryker and the others traversed the rugged terrain in hopes of finding The Fellowship. Arriving by water allowed them to bypass the desert. This saved them a great deal of time, something they were running short on. Although Stryker wasn’t certain where to find The Fellowship, Mercury had given him several clues over the years. With Stryker were Cookie, Alex, Cheyanne, Autumn, Cleo, Sheba, Roman, Tinsleigh and Kirby. Remy and Magnum followed closely behind, pulling a sled filled with ropes, nets and river rocks.

Startling the group, a grey speckled faced Great Dane came bounding down the trail. His big smile stretched from ear to ear across his long face. Large nostrils snorted and his ears hung to the side.

“Jake?” Stryker exclaimed with surprise. Joining the Great Dane was his brother, Joey, and sister, Nari. The three had all come to The Bridge together after being poisoned. Although they fought hard, the toxins were too deadly.

“We have to hurry,” Jake greeted them in a panic. “Follow me!” The Dane turned and trotted up the trail.

Stryker looked at Cheyanne in confusion. Joey approached and said, “We were following Mercury and the others through the Red Sand Desert, but we lost them. We decided to climb a nearby cliff where we could see across the plateau and down into the valley.”

“We watched you arrive,” said Nari. Her cinnamon-coloured fur was sprinkled with sand.

“Hurry up!” Barked Jake. “We’re running out of time.”

Joey continued, “From our lookout we also watched a pack of coyotes head to the nearby mountains.” Joey paused before continuing. “With them were two skeleton Jackals.”

“How far are we from the mountains?” Stryker asked.

“It’s across a plateau that starts at the top of the trailhead,” replied Nari.

“Jake!” Stryker called out to the Great Dane. “Come back and join us. We have a plan.”

After explaining the plan to Jake, Joey and Nari, the group quickly headed to the top of the trailhead. “I see something!” Barked Autumn. “It’s Mercury and the others.”

The Ibizan Hounds were running towards them. Daisy and Momas ran next to them, while Kenny and Tonka hitched a ride on the back of Momas. Closely behind the group was a cloud of dust created by their pursuers.

“Everyone get into position,” cried Stryker. “We don’t have much time.”

The group dispersed, each with a specific task to perform. Stryker turned to Tinsleigh, “Are you sure the three of you are okay with this?” The Pointer confidently nodded and ran off with Alex and Kirby.

Stryker rushed to the sled and pulled out a large fishing net. He and Magnum dragged it to a Joshua Tree. The twisted limb of the tree would work perfectly as a fulcrum for the netting.

Alex, Kirby and Tinsleigh ran along the edge of the canyon. The three kicked up dust, so much so Tinsleigh’s white chest and legs were beige. Back at the edge of the plateau, Autumn and Cheyanne crouched down behind two boulders, in their paws they held a long rope. Cookie and Sheba trotted out to a swinging bridge. Magnum pulled the sled next to a Creosete Bush where Remy was waiting. He reached into the sled and picked up one of the river rocks. Roman and Cleo stood patiently, waiting to bait the coyotes. Jake and Joey climbed a cliff and prepared the fishing net they had taken out of the sled. Directly below the cliff, Nari paced.

Stryker flopped down into the dusty sand and covered himself in grit and dirt. His pure white coat turned brownish-beige. With a rope in his paw, he curled up into a ball, perfectly blending in with his surroundings. Stryker waited patiently.

Remy signaled to Mercury and the others, the group headed towards the Lab and the cover of the Creosete Bush.

Out on the plateau, Alex, Kirby and Tinsleigh ran towards the coyotes, approaching them from the side. They barked at the Jackals. In tandem they turned their skeleton heads toward the dogs. Without hesitation, the Jackals changed direction and plundered after them.

The lead pack of coyotes followed Mercury and the others. Under the cover of the bush, Mercury, Elvis and Momas joined the Labbies and began bombarding the approaching coyotes with river rocks. One by one the coyotes crumbled to the ground.

Roman and Cleo began barking, drawing the attention of several coyotes. The angry animals sped towards them. At the ideal moment, Cheyanne and Autumn tugged on the rope, making it go rigid and tight. The thick woven line caught the coyotes by surprise, causing them to flip upside-down. Another pack of coyotes headed for Nari. The lead coyote snarled, globs of saliva dripped from the corners of its mouth. Jake and Joey released the netting and it came down on top of the coyotes just as they closed in on Nari. Jake pulled on the line, securing the netting and containing the pack.

The last few coyotes cautiously approached. They held their heads low. Out at the swinging bridge, from behind a Mormon Tea Bush, Cookie watched the coyotes creep slowly towards the Joshua Tree. Next to the tree, Stryker remained still; his sand-covered coat concealed him. Snarling and growling, the coyotes moved closer and closer. Stryker pulled on the rope and the ground beneath the coyotes’ paws shifted and gyrated, revealing the netting. Before the coyotes could do anything, they where scooped up and left to dangle helplessly from the top branch of the tree. Back at the Mormon Tea Bush, Cookie’s tail wagged with excitement. She was proud of her hunting buddy; her teachings had finally paid off.

With all of the coyotes detained, the dogs turned their attention to the skeleton Jackals pursuing the Pointers.

Tinsleigh could feel the Jackals nipping at her heels. In front of her, Kirby and Alex kicked dust up in her face. Kirby reached the bridge, her nails made clicking noises on the slats of wood. Alex was close behind. His added weight made the bridge sway. Tinsleigh was the last to reach the bridge. From behind the Mormon Tea Bush, Cookie and Sheba watched the skeleton Jackals follow the three dogs. The weight of all of them made the bridge bounce and swing uncontrollably. Tinsleigh had difficulty catching up to the two in front of her.

Cookie and Sheba came out from their hiding place and got into position. The trailing Jackal stopped and looked back at the Doberman and Pointer. The two began to panic as the Jackal changed direction and headed towards them. Kirby and Alex reached the end of the bridge and started to encourage Tinsleigh. One Jackal was only strides away from reaching the liver and white Pointer, while the other was heading back fro Cookie and Sheba.

“Now, Sheb’z!” Cookie barked. The two dogs each raised a paw and brought the hatchets they held down on the line, cleaning slicing through the rope. In slow motion they watched the bridge slither and fall away. The Jackal clawed at the wood slats but couldn’t grab a hold. Just a few feet from reaching the two dogs, the beastly skeleton began to descend.

“Hurry!!” Alex barked.

“Jump,” Kirby screamed.

Tinsleigh felt the bridge begin to fall away from under her. In a last ditch effort she leapt forward, soaring through the air. The Jackal began flailing its limbs. Like its partner, there was little it could do. Tinsleigh landed on solid ground next to Kirby and Alex. The three watched the Jackal plunge to the canyon floor.
