I don't understand how anybody could defend declawing???

I recently posted on the Answers board telling a person who was asking about declawing her cat how incredibly cruel and inhumane it is. I posted the link to www.declawing.com that shows the horrifying amputation process. I just don't think people understand that it is not like a manicure. So somebody else posts a response and says the following "Not all declawing is amputation in form. The other form involves using a scalpel to cut the toe open and "Scoop" out the nail. The cuts are then closed and bandages are placed over the paws."
WHAT?!?! scoop out the nail? I have never heard of this and I don't see how it is any less horrifying that the amputation. How could anybody who loves their cat do this? And how are we supposed to educate people on how horrible it is if you have others coming along to pretend it's ok? shrug

I know Allie, its frustrating. I don't know how anyone could be told just exactly what it does and still want to do that to their cat. shrug

Hopefully that person asking the question read the info you provided and learned how horrible it is, and you saved a cat from being disfigured.

Did you read the comments left after the declawing poll? While many were not in favour of declawing, it was disheartening to see the number defending this procedure. Boggles my mind.

No, we did not see the poll, but sadly it does not surprise me. frown

I watch my cats use their claws, they are such a part of them! I cannot imaging taking that away from them.

My vet won't even do it. In fact when Chelsea ripped one out by accident and I took her there to have it cauterized, I joked that since I don't believe in declawing she decided to do it herself one toe at a time. He stopped what he was doing, looked at me and said "You don't? That's terrific!" I sometimes feel like he isn't too sure about me because mine are purebreds and he's a rescue king so any points I can gain with him are worth it! But there are still people who seem to feel it's part of the normal order of cat ownership. You spay/neuter and declaw as part of the routine. My own sister and best friend would have done it if I didn't harrass the heck out of them. First thing I did when they each got a kitten was to show up with a scratching post as a welcome home gift!

I don't know if our vet does it or not yet. We only started going to her recently after Tasha developed her Pododermatitus. She is a kitty only vet which I really like, so I think she is much more likely not to do it than our previous vets. What a great idea to give a scratching post as a new baby gift!

I once injured my big toe, resulting in having the entire nail removed under local anaesthetic. It was the most painful thing I've ever had to endure in my life (everyone knows the nerves in the nail bed are very concentrated) and it took me months to recover. And that was just the nail. I cannot imagine the pain and trauma involved in the amputation surgery of EVERY claw, and I am at a loss to understand how this butchery practice evolved. I am shocked that people who claim to love cats do this to their animals. It's illegal in most European countries, so, even if you tried, you could not find a vet who would carry out this barbaric operation.
