by Soseki Natsume

I found it in the Huntington Library/Gardens bookstore in Pasadena, CA. Just sitting there, staring at me. Fun! Sounds very exciting, though I have not yet begun to read it. I hope you'll join me!

From the back cover:
Richly allegorical and deilightfully readable, I Am a Cat is the chronicle of an unloved, unwanted, wandering kitten who spends all his time observing human nature - from the dramas of businessmen and schoolteachers to the foibles of priests and potentates. From this unique perspective, author Soseki Natsume offers a biting commentary - shaped by his training in Chinese philosophy - on the social upheaval of the Meiji era.

...that's what i found in my fav online book store about it:

"Written over the course of 1904-6, Soseki's comic masterpiece," I Am a Cat," satirizes the follies of upper-middle-class Japanese society during the Meiji era. With acerbic wit and sardonic perspective, it follows the whimsical adventures of a world-weary stray kitten who comments on the follies and foibles of the people around him. The New Yorker called it ""a nonchalant string of anecdotes and wisecracks, told by a fellow who doesn't have a name, and has never caught a mouse, and isn't much good for anything except watching human beings in action...""

sounds very much like i could like it...

Hi Everyone!wave

Remember me? I feel terrible I haven't been reading much at all especially for relaxation. Summer is here and that is usually the time I love to read. Your book sounds very intereting. If there is no pressure, I'd like to read it with you! Is this book available at most bookstores?

I love summer reading!happy dance

Hugs,
Toulouse

I've been highly anticipating reading this book. I found a couple of short reviews that encouraged me even more and have really sparked my desire to begin!

As for scheduling and such, I think it's best if it's leisurely. I'd like to maybe have a milestone or two, here or there, perhaps... But we'll see what it's like when we start reading. It might become obvious at that point. I think it's separated into three parts?

For my part, and Ishtar's I think, we're going to start in a couple of weeks.

hah! my first post re-appeared...

yes, sasha, milestones sound a good option. i think the chapters are of different lengths and my person sometimes has what she calls a "lack of concentration". i guess i could be the first to start but for sure we are the slowest readers... so perhaps the "last starter" then could give the signal for a discussion point?

toulouse - you make me jeaolous! laugh out loud "like a turtle" sounds so much more relaxing and pleasant than "jump like a bouncing ball". typical for mine is that she has meanwhile started - - - put away the book - started the computer - - - read the wikipedia-article about "meiji-period" - shut down the computer - - - took book - - - put away book - - - went to the kitchen to make some tea - - - took book again - - -

i wonder when she'll come to the moment to get up and fetch the dictionary... confused

could anybody please tell me how to enjoy reading together this way???

Momma got the book from the library, so we're ready to start when y'all are. What they did for another online book discussion Momma was in was they had a separate thread each for volume of the book so people could join the discussion as they read and not have to worry about spoilers. And seeing other people discussing it inspired others to read more quickly so they could join in the discussion.
