Hello everyone, I am new to this site and group. I am a 13 yoa maltese and I am starting to feel my age. I have rotten teeth and am not able to be put under so I have to take antibiotics daily and wait for them to fall out naturally. I also have a breathing problem that my Dr. said comes with age and have to take steroids daily. Now my Dr is concerned I might have cushing disease and i really dont understand what that is. He said it is becoming more common in elderly lap dogs. I had the tests run last Friday and will get the results back on Mon or Tues. Has anyone ever had to deal with this disease and what success is the outcome. I will have to take meds because I cant be put to sleep for any surgeries, bad experience, I saw the white light twice while trying to get my teeth cleaned, but they brought me back. Long story, anyone that has any information pls let me and my momma know ... Thank you

Hello everyone, well I got my tests back and I am positive for Cushings Disease. I started meds and after the second dose, I got really sick from vomitting. I got really dehydrated. I momma kept me going with pedialite (sp) and baby food and now I back to my normal self, but have to go to the Dr. on Monday to try another medicine that my Dr. just learned about at a conference in Florida. I would really like to have a tried and true medicine, but he said it is suspose to be really good for Cushings dogs. My momma is going to try to delay it a week to get my system completely back to normal before they start something else. Wish me luck !!

Hi Cricket,

I have Cushing's disease and my mom gives me a med called 'C-Mitotane. It has to be made up special by a pharmacy that will make dog meds because the dose is weird for my size (I'm a 15 lb Rat Terrier) and it is cyto-toxic (Moms aren't allowed to handle it).

I'm such a piggie dog that I ate right through the 'loading dose' and barely got sick at all! Now I take it twice a week and my fur has grown back much nicer!

Hope you are feeling okay...http://www.dogster.com/forums/post.php#

Hi Cricket. My great uncle Einstein, Cindy's first Keeshond, had Cushings disease...it isn't too odd to have it show up in older dogs. Way, way, simplified description is your system is producing more cortisol than it needs if you have Cushings Disease...cuz the adrenal glands are not working correctly...for a variety of reasons...could be a tumor on the adrenal gland, adrenal gland malfunction, or pituitary gland isn't sending the right signals to the adrenals. It IS treatable!!! Uncle Einstein did okay with it...just gotta get a firm diagnosis and then go with treatment. Pawmail me if you want to talk more about it...and hang in there. Your human might get more stressed over this than you do, humans being humans...so kinda nudge her towards other doggie people who've dealt with Cushings, cuz talking about it always seems to help the humans out.
