I was shocked when I read this article in the Tribune....

David Dinger read the Craigslist posting on Monday morning when he got to work: “Anti-Cruelty Society Stole My Dog.”

“It was harsh,” said Dinger, the society’s vice president of operations. “But not too far from the truth.”

Two years ago, Rebecca Kramer, a 21-year-old college student, adopted Leila, a beagle mix, from the shelter. On a walk last month, Leila got loose of her leash and ran away, Kramer said.

For days, Kramer called animal shelters, including the Anti-Cruelty Society. The Loop resident was told that she would be called if her dog, who has a microchip, was returned. But Kramer heard nothing.

So Kramer passed out fliers, and put ads on Craigslist and in the Chicago Reader. Desperate, she began to peruse online listings of dogs up for adoption. On the Web she saw a photo of Leila, up for adoption at the Anti-Cruelty Society.

When Kramer showed up on Sunday to claim her dog, staff members said Leila had just been adopted by another family.

The Anti-Cruelty Society has since gotten Leila’s new owners to agree to give her back to Kramer, who expects to reunite with Leila on Tuesday. The owners who are losing Leila will get a free adoption and many apologies, Dinger said.

“The reality is we screwed up,” Dinger said. “When we make a mistake, we fix it.”
