I was a stray and was dumped off at someones house, Mommy took me in cause she always wanted a little kitty like me. When I got spayed a couple weeks later the vet found hard lumps on my uterus and told Mommy that I most likely had the feline leukemia disease. Ok, he is pretty positive that I have it which made everyone sad. Mommy has been reading a lot about the disease and in these forums here and it looks like kitties can live a long time with it which makes her very happy. I am pretty small for my age but really healthy and they feed me really good food so I hope I stay healthy so I can play with my doggie sister for a long long time.

Hi Patches! I'm so glad you joined us! wave

Have you actually been tested for FeLV? Or does your vet just think you have it? In any case, it won't hurt you at ALL to eat really good food and stay healthy! Do you have any kitty siblings? Your doggie sibling can't get FeLV from you, so play with him or her as much as you want! happy dance happy dance happy dance

Hi there, the vet gave us my uterus and stuff in a container, but haven't gotten actually tested yet to be positive. I don't have any kitty siblings, the vet said don't get any either but I don't care because I love my doggie sister very much.

Meowlo. My name is Sable and I recently tested positive for the thing that humans call FELV.

I showed up one day at my current human's aunt's house. No one knows for sure where I came from, or how long I had been on the streets. I was wearing a battered, dirty collar with no identification on it. The human I found had me health tested and I was negative for FELV and FIV. Since she had a cat that doesn't like other cats, my current human volunteered to take me. I've lived here with Brooke, Chloe, and Maus for two and a half years and have been healthy.

A couple of weeks ago I came down with the sniffles so my human took me to the v-e-t. They drew blood - hiss! - and ran some basic tests, including a cbc/sma and a repeat of the felv/fiv test. I've been on antibiotics for a week now and feel totally fine, which is why what came next is a surprise. The results of my blood tests shocked my humans. Everything was normal except for one important detail - that I tested positive for FELV on the IFA test.

What's worse is that I like to play and wrestle with the kitties I live with, and that they too could have this FELV disease. They are going in tomorrow to be tested for it. My human is very sad and scared and would like to learn as much as possible about the disease so she knows what to expect.

Hi Sable! I was just getting ready to pmail you, so I am glad to hear from you here in the group. hug

Mommy understands what your mom is going through and she's here if your mom needs to talk. I was only with my family for two weeks when I was diagnosed with FeLV, but mommy chose to go against our vet's advice and keep us together. Keeping us apart would have stressed me out too much. Dr. Nan (my holistic vet) agrees. Still, she was on the verge of a panic attack each time I wrestled with Tucker. I LOVE Tucker! Trouble is, so does mommy. He's the love of her life! She couldn't bear the thought of me giving him FeLV.

Once she calmed down, she realized that if there was to be an exposure, then it probably already happened. The best thing to do is to keep us all healthy. Hopefully, because Tucker and Tessie have mature immune systems, they will not get FeLV. Mommy will have them tested someday just so she knows their status, but it really won't change anything.

I'd like to suggest to you that if your vet tells you nothing can be done to boost your immune systems, that you look into going to a holistic vet. I am sure you have a wonderful vet (as wonderful as vets can be anyway!) but holistic vets have different treatment methods. Just something to think about. smile

I will be purring that your sibs test negative, but even if they don't ... it's going to be okay! hug hug hug

Yeah, one of my V-E_T-S said it would cause me more stress to seperate me from the other cats. I love playing wrestlefight with Maus, and I'd miss the company of other cats too much. It's Maus and Chloe's turn to go to the vet today - they don't know what's coming, mol. I'll just conveniently forget to tell Maus that he's going to be getting poked..

Hi, Tommy's mom here! Tommy is out getting his pockets picked today, so I am taking over for him. I just read on Hazel Lucy's thread that one of your sibs has tested positive and the other negative. Sorry, I cannot remember which.

First of all, my heart truly goes out to your mom! But I hope she realizes that her main goal is going to be keeping ALL of you healthy, even the negative kitties. Because if a negative kitty catches a cold, normally this isn't a big deal. But if a positive kitty catches a cold from a negative kitty, it can turn into a bigger issue. So your mom should focus not necessarily on the individual FeLV statuses of all of you, but rather on making you all the pictures of health, and keeping it that way! She can do it! hug

I hope I am making sense!

I'm late getting around to posting my/our stories. I've been busy getting the Friends of the Blind Cat Rescue Group organized and active. But we're back now!

Bo is our first FeLV+ kitty. His pregnant mommy turned up on my cousin's porch and when the babies came, we claimed Bo and Cider, his littermate brother. I was devestated when we learned they were FeLV+. At first all went well. Then Cider developed a lump on his paw. It caused him pain so we had it removed. That started the snowball rolling. Within six weeks, he was paralyzed from the mid-section back with cancer that had attacked his spine. We did everything we could, including trips to the state vet school in Athens, GA, but we finally had to let him go. So far, at almost four years of age, Bo is healthy and robust!

Seven was next. My hubby found him as a tiny kitten on the loading dock of a grocery store, crying pitifully. Again, the FeLV+ diagnosis. Seven will be two in June. So far, so good!

Most recently, Darcy joined the family. She was abandoned where I work and once again, is FeLV+. She's not yet a year old and is a happy, healthy kitten. We're going to repeat her test soon to make sure of the diagnosis.

In addition to these three babies, we have one deaf cat (Shamrock) and one who is blind (Scarlett). The others are so-called 'normal'. wink

So that's our story! We'd love to have you all as furriends!
